Power company killed off my tank!

Agreed. Amazing how quickly people chime in with 'I would have...' or 'you should have'. He asked for help on the next course of action, not critique on the last one. I too am sorry for your loss. I would go with a realistic replacement cost for everything that was lost. Odds are that if they give you anything, it won't be full replacement value, but it's better than nothing.

And for the poster who said Semper isn't entitled to anything from gov't or corporations, try spending a few years in the Marines and then we'll talk about the 'entitlement mentality'.

Good luck Semper. S/F

Semper Fi - I guess i didn't read your original post very well - I had a bad day at work (look at my occupation - I do pacemakers and ICD implants as well as some very complicated cardiac ablations on very sick people - a bad day means somebody died) -

I would go to my LFS, and make a list of stuff with prices as they were when they cut your power and submit that to them. With any luck at all they will cut you a check.

Semper,

I apologize for what I think I started in stating my opinion. I appreciate you for your service to my country and my freedom.

Guess you should take pics of everything that dies or maybe a digital dated picture of yuor tank and take it to an LFS and get propper ID and prices of everything you had as you mentioned not knowing what yuor SPS were. IF yuo can have it stamped or maybe on a paper from the LFS that shuold make it more official. Any input from the company do you know at least ifthey are willing to compensate you or not
Are you sure yuo can prove it's their mistake as yuo did sign a disconnection form?

Wow lots of judges here. I think he asked for help didn't he? Not abuse I don't think.

welcome to the internet where people have varied opinions.

I'd go onto liveaquaria.com et al. and just get flat out replacement costs for everything. Trying to assign an arbitrary value to how much some of that stuff was worth to you isn't going to get you anywhere with the power company's lawyers. If anything, try to get reimbursed for the replacement costs for the animals at the last size you can PROVE they were (through pictures, etc.). Then, moving forward, build up that "emergency fund" before putting any more money into the tank.

welcome to the internet where people have varied opinions.

Opinions are fine, but what I have read here is way more than opinions!

I was brought up on the if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all. Now granted, I do not follow that all of the time, but I do know when and where to open my mouth and do not think this was one of those times. Why should we as a whole kick a man when he is down, he came here asking for help and just explained the situation he was in.... WOW!

that is just my opinion.

For the fish, I would go onto liveaquaria and print out each page with the picture, description, and price. Corals are tough because each colony is different. If possible, maybe you could bring a bag of dead coral skeletons to 2-3 LFS and explain the situation and ask "if these were alive and you were selling them, what would the total dollar value be?". You could print up some kind of form with fill in the blanks for dollar value and the owner's name, store name, address, and signature (If you feel like being a smart-donkey, you can include a section that asks if the cost to repair would be larger then the cost to replace :) ). Then average the 2-3 quotes the LFS gives you. Then you can include these qoutes, along with the LiveAquaria pages, in whatever submission you do. I think the key is to make it as objective as possible, and show them you are not just making up numbers. That's the reason companies don't usually do well with reimbursements for live animals or sentimental items - very hard to put a value on it.

Oh, and IMO, I would rather see these government utility payments go to an ex-marine who was recently laid off with 2 kids and a wife than to that "single mother of 11" mentioned, who probably hasn't had a job in 3 years and is single because her "baby daddy" is in jail.

I'll be changing my sig when I'm done with this post...even though I believe in free speech and free views, if it offended one then it offended too many. I saw it on a bumper sticker on a site I went to earlier to vent after getting a little 'touchy' so to speak.
No worries, keep it on if you want, I just thought it was really insensitive and wanted to tell you.

Yeah, those 11 kids should probably have jobs by now anyway. :rolleye1:

Anyway, if you're getting a list of livestock with prices, you should get them from the LFS not the internet because of the difference in prices. At least I would because I don't like getting livestock online even though it's cheaper.

I just spent over 2 hours replying to you all and updating with pictures and everything. I submitted it and apparently had too many pics included and was told to hit my back button and edit some pics. Of course when I hit the back button it was all gone. I will try to recreate...

:mad2:

10 images (and that includes smileys) per post.

Always copy everything to a clipboard if it is a huge post, just in case.

Yeah...I usually do. Don't know why I didn't this time. And it was well over 10 images. I'll shorten it up this time and make a few seperate posts.

P.S. Marc are you anywhere near Round Rock Texas?
