Power goes out...

How long can my sps survive with no flow on them at all? I came home yesterday with some more frags, and to my horror the power was out. I panicked, luckily it came back on within an hour or so but it was out for around 7 hours.

I don't notice too much harm, other than a bit of sliming still (one or two clear strands, very short) but PE isn't that great.

Also, seeing as how it has been storming here for a week, I am curious to know since I have even more frags now.

And if you would be so kind, how bad is no flow for my lps, softies, and nem?

I am asking here since my tank is mainly SPS.

TIA

I'm with you. I've got my powerheads plugged into a 1000 watt UPS and think it would help with oxygen and flow. Not sure how long it would run but my k4s are great on power consumption. Id like to have a generator tied into breaker box on circuit that tank is on that could be started once I discover the powers out:thumbsup:

I own a 5500 watt generator. Its been a reef saver and a basement saver "sump pump" for me at the same time. I only paid $350 for it to. I've ran the above and TV, fridges, ect on it before in storms. Small investment for peace of mind.

i have been lucky so far and never really needed anything... i am sure my luck is running out however...

i dont think i would want it more then 24 hours with no flow.... if yyou find your self in that situation you can always get a big spoon fromthe kitchen drawer and swish things around a bit with that... but for the original question i would like 24 hours or less....

frags survive pretty well in transport for 24 hours. So I'd asume you can go a little longer

I'd disagree here. You're talking about a single fish/coral within a bag consuming the oxygen. Within your tank all the organisms consume the oxygen in a much faster manner. I'd give it half that but that is just a guess

***A UPS is an interuptible power supply which has a battery inside which is charged. Once power goes out it seemlessly switches to the UPS and powerheads continue pumping.

Looked at post after I said it....UPS is actually 'uninterruptible power supply'. Interruptible would not make much sense would it?

I have had the power go out for long periods before but after 4 hours I hook up my genarater. A few years back a Ice storm nocked out the power in my neck of the woods for a week straight. The genarater was a life saver!

I came home from work today, power was out. Looked at my mechanical fuge light and power had been out for 7 hours. I hooked up a powerhead to a inverter in my car and ran for a further 2 hours before the power came back. Temp dropped to 81 and other than a bit of sliming everything looks pretty good (4 hours later).

Im gonna invest in an mp20 and battery backup.

temp should have read 71!

My mp40 with battery back up worked well for me already this year once. Several hour no power and had good flow the whole time.

I had previously stated that I use a UPS. I actually tested it today with powerheads and it ran up to 6.25 hours. UPS was beeping like crazy towards the end so I ended up plugging it back into the outlet. Anyways, 6.25 hours is some peace of mind for me should the power go out;)
