Power head came loose.

So I woke up this morning and saw that my power head/fan came loose over night. It kicked up sand all over my live rock and in the corner it is now bare with no sand. I kinda pushed some sand back into the corner and dusted off the live rock cause it was pretty covered. Everything in the tank is fine (no corals except for Xenia and it looks like it actually enjoyed the dusting) I just wanna make sure there isn't a protocol for when this type of thing happens. Haven't checked params will do it when the kid goes to sleep.
HELP!!!!

Nasty accident. Get a turkey baster and get the sand off your rocks; the fish will move the rest.

You should run some type of mechanical filter like a filter sock if you are not already doing so and running some carbon wouldn't hurt

Thanks!!! I did that earlier as well as I could. Tank params are the same so keep your fingers crossed that I don't kill my tank

I've got a canister that is pretty much a carbon reactor. 2 bags of carbon and 2 media sponges no floss. Also with a protein skimmer. All sand has settled and it looks like a lot got back on the live rock lol I might just take it slow and dust off one rock at a time till it calms down

one trick I use for lots of sand on the rock, such as this, is siphon it off and into a bucket through a filter sock. All of the sand will get caught in the filter sock and you can dump the water back in the tank. If it's a lot of sand, you can rinse and put back in the tank. It can help things settle faster if you turn off most of your power heads for 15 minutes or so, but isn't usually necessary.

I wouldn't worry about the tank unless you had an old DSB and kicked up a bunch of detritus and black stuff.

I actually don't use a filter sock, but an industrial 5 micron filter. same principle as a filter sock though. A filter sock can easily catch the sand. mine just catches everything else that's too small to see too.

Is it a suction cup model? The magnetic base ones are a lot less likely to do this so that might be worth looking into if yours stops sticking or a fish keeps bumping it off.

Nope no deep sand bed only about 2 1/2". But I have seen what I am assuming is detritus develop in the sand so hope fully it doesn't take over my tank

Yes it is a suction cup model. I got it at petco I didn't even know they had magnetic ones. I was thinking of getting a bigger fan so I might just upgrade

You can get them for cheap on ebay. I just ordered a couple of 1300 gph ones with the magnetic base. It was about $32 for both. A friend and I have used their brand (sunsun) power heads for years and they still work great, except the suction cups don't work as well now. One of mine even survived a lot of turtle abuse.

I bought a Goby who did the same on my tank. For about two weeks the water was cloudy and sand everywhere on LR. I'm still dealing with sand on LR. A GSP coral (that wasn't doing well) didn't like that and I believe that was one of the causes who defeated him.

Now the Goby has calmed down and he's quite interesting fish to observe.
