Power outage - 48hrs

Hi,

I was unprepared for an ice storm in southeast MI. I moved here from CA in October and have not purchase a generator and i didn't take the necessary precautions for a power outage.

A storm his this weekend and my power was out for almost 48hrs. It came back on at 7pm est this evening.

I have a 65g CTC tank with a 30g sump. The tank is 3mo old. It's stocked with 3 bg chromis, a false perc, and a midas blenny.. and some zoas, a hammer and a chalice.

I drove and called around like a mad man to find a battery powered air pump/stone and a indoor safe propane heater. I finally found both after numerous stops.

I kept the heater in my office (where the tank is located) with the door open during the day, and i had to move the heater from the upstairs landing to the office every two hours at night. I have a 15mo old daughter who needed the heat too. I ran the two air-pumps on each side of the tank.

The clown stayed out the whole time. The chromis and blenny hid in their sleeping spots the whole time.

When the power came back on, i let the tank run for 30min and then put some flake in the tank and thankfully all of the fish came out to eat. It was quite the relief.

The tank read 63.5 degrees when i turned it back on. Do you think my corals and fish are going to be okay? I keep the tank ~78 usually.

Needless to say, i am making an appointment with generac and getting a backup system for the whole house.

:hmm4:

if you raise the tank 2-3 degrees, maybe a little more each day you should be fine. Raising the tank 14 degrees in one day will not be good on corals or the fish

I brought my tank from 60-78 as fast as the heaters could do it back in October after a 3 day outage. No visible issues with any of my corals or fish. Don't know exactly how long it took, it turned on in the evening and by the next morning temp was back to normal.

Shocked to hear that, but good to know.

brought my tank from 62F to 78F in about 8 hours when my heater broke. no visible side effects either. actually my fish and corals are doing much better

You may not need a Generec. I have a 6000 watt portable and intalled a transfer switch and although I can't do the whole house I can run my tank and sump, furnace, refrigerator and tv I could have all circuits on except the pump for my well. Everything I need

The only issue is if you are not home when the power goes out. Good that you moved quick. Because of Hurricane Charlie, when I lived in Florida, I lost everything in the tank within about the 1st 24 hours.

I travel quite a bit so having peace of mind when i'm gone might be worth the extra $.

I'm getting a couple quotes on the generac next week. we'll see.

everything seems to have recovered nicely. pretty crazy since the temp dropped over 10 degrees.
