Power Outage - Got Generator? Pump? Water?

Going on about 9 hours for power outage with no real relief in sight. We have a blown fuse at the end of the neighborhood line that is taking out two blocks and about 80 homes. Given KUB's other priorities, it will likely take a day or three to get around to us. Anybody have a generator they'd be willing to loan me for a few days so I can keep my freezer (and, of course, my reef tank) going?

If not, does anybody have a battery pump I can use for circulation? I have a battery air pump, but given the temperature rise we are likely to see today I'd rather not pump warm air into the tank. If this doesn't get fixed soon I fear my tank may go down. I plan to do a few water changes when the electricity comes back. But I am out of salt water at the moment and, with Aquatic Marine closed for the next two weeks and Coral Reef not opening until 4pm, I am not sure where I can go. Anybody know another source locally?

Just got a report from home that Chuckie is dying. Adding air, but probably water is being poisoned from too long no flow.

Battery air pump doesn't work (old, corroded) and Walmart doesn't carry any. Will try Petsmart when they finally open at 9am, but not holding out high hopes here. Chuckie is belly-up and gasping now. Still need to try to save the rest of the tank and my son's freshwater fish, too.

I have no water changes. Just used the last of my water on Sunday. And I am going to be one of those without electricity for days simply because a fuse for 40 houses is very low on priorities.

Looks like I am out of luck on the battery air pumps. None at Petsmart, Pets Supply, Petco, or even Home Depot. Aquarium says they carry them on their website, but they do not open until 11am. So I suppose I'll go there and get a couple of pumps and some water then and hope the damage isn't too much in the meantime.

The longest power has ever been out at my house is 5 hours in the last 12 years. I suppose I'll have to plan for stuff like this a little better in the future.

Your fish is gasping for oxygen. If you can get a big glass and dip it in the water and pour it back it will help. If it splashes a little bit that would be good. Just keep doing that for a while and see if it helps.

Buy an inverter and use a car battery. You can get both at walmart.

Managed to go home and change about 5G and get a battery air pump going. Did not see any fish floating, which is good. And snails were still alive. Will give one or more of you a call. Thanks for the offers.

Inverter and car battery is a good idea, but will cost around $150. Can get a low power generator for around $250. From looking at what KUB says, outages will last for some through the weekend, so this might be best option. Just don't have that much money sitting around at the moment (especially after car repairs this week).

your tank is small, you could take it to power rather than vice versa.

manual agitation with a pitcher is better than nothing until you get a pump going.

i have an inverter u can borrow if you have a spare battery.

Emergency oxygenation

Emergency oxygenation

For emergency oxygenation, you can add a teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide per 10 gallons once every 4 hours. It will work. Your corals won't like it but it won't hurt them long term. I have used this before.

I've got a practically empty RSM that's regularly water changed if you want me to house smaller fish or I've got the 120 with good lights (also regularly water changed) for corals. Lemme know.

I think moving your tank sounds like a good idea though.

Thanks, Mel. Eddie already managed to get 15G to me (thank you, Eddie!). That should be good for 3 water changes for now. I can get more from Coral Reef if I need it. I might take you up on housing my corals -- at least my newest frags and clam if you can take them. We'll see how it goes.

I really appreciate the offer, but...

...the brother of a friend had one he uses for tools on construction sites. I just finished hooking it up and the computer, TV, and fishtank downstairs going. I'll shut it down for the evening, but at least things will be functioning full capacity during the day.

Tank seems good as far as corals go. They are even opening up. My watchman goby and pistol shrimp look okay. No sign of Chuckie, though. I fear the worst. :sad2:
