power outage prep

Unit comes with air stone. I would just remove batteries when your not using it. They work well when in a pinch.

The stone those come with are very small. I went to Walmart and bought the long strip ones they had.

Saved everything in a 125, 75, 46 and a 10 gallon cube with those little boxes. 4 days without power.

The whole point is the batteries stay in, to kick in when the power goes out.

I don't use an air stone with it. If you're going to keep it as backup, it will get clogged with time (unless you want to keep replacing it every so often). It will work fine without an air stones. Bubbles will be bigger but will still break the surface of the water.

I connected an acrylic tube to the air line.

And ran it along my overflow. Can barely see it.

To be safe, they recommend an airline check valve.

Yeah i guess i don't use mine like that. Somebody is always home, so if the power goes out for an extended period of time, would have them grab it and use it. To be honest, I've used it once or twice in 10 years for about a hour or two at a time. Nice to have just in case.

I've got two of them (DFS ones) permanently on my tank with the air stones in the far corners about 1-2" down from the surface. The pumps are wired to a relay that plugs in. When the power goes out, it shuts the relay and sends power to them and they start bubbling. I had them on my 90 for years and yes, the stones get covered with coraline, but the air still comes out. This is my emergency plan for when I'm not home, if I loose power. They've worked well, so a cheap method of safety, just keep extra batteries on hand.
