Power outages

I also have battery air pumps if anyone needs. I can also like serpentman whip up tanks as well if needed. I have plenty of large rubbermaids lying around that could work.

I love my whole house Generac generator. It runs on natural gas and turns on automatically when the power goes out. I'm in the snow belt and we lose power all the time. Old pic - generator next to a/c for size comparison.

Nice generator setup, that and nice pines in back yard must help you sleep well at night.

How much did the setup cost you? Also what can this generator run? i am planning for the winter snowstorms. the stories here are heartbreaking and hope it does not happen to anyone of us.

I bought it in the spring of 2005. I think it cost me around $5500 installed. It is a 17kW unit. I have my whole house on it, the furnace, central air, hot water tank, kitchen etc..

Lots of people are still without power. My side of the street was "miraculously" restored, while the other side and most of the rest of my neighborhood are still in the dark (so to speak). So, it's not just the outlying areas. This evening makes 72 hours without power for my neighbors.

If you have a 200 plus system, one or two total losses would definately offset $5500 in a blink.

With all the headaches and public safety the high cost to bury cables systematically in the older neighborhoods. I just wonder if the public is taking it in the end?


Did John get rescued?
Saw something about lifelines, but no verdict. One tank was seasoned overgrown softies if memory serves in question about fragging humongous leather...shame to lose that stuff.

sheesh. What part of the Heights are you in?

The houses just across the street from me finally got power yesterday. Are you staying in the house. Looks like some of my neighbors left to stay with others until the power came back on.

power is on. I had no choice but to stay here. I had to fill up the little generator I had every two hours in order to keep my tank up.

Got power restored about 2:30 PM Thursday after being out since Sunday afternoon. Lost my female Clarkii early on and so far my male/juvenal Clarkii is MIA so I am not sure. The corals are sliming all over the place. Thought I was all set with my 6.5 KV portable generator till I could not get it started so the tanks were out about 14 hours till I was able to get it limping along. At this point I consider myself very fortunate to not have lost more. We had a tree come down on 2 cars, mine was minimal with a little body damage and a shattered driver's door window, my sons car suffered the majority of the damage. It came down across the roof and then slid down the side, shattered the rear window. He got an estimate $6100 and it will be in the shop for 3-4 weeks. The good news no one was hurt.

well i got home last night and my tanks all weathered the storm a few small SPS peices did some RTN but thats the worst of it.

they were only without power 9 hours with no supervision besides one stirring at around 9pm

i think my tanks open profile helps with 02 saturation in a power outage.

GSMguy, I am surprised that you had any loss at all with only a 9 hours power loss.

I'm getting antsy thinking about being without a generator...I've just been lucky and there's going to be a toll to pay soon. :hmm2:

I actually only lost 1 sps frag, my salinity was a little low because my new oversized ATB skimmer overflowed when it restarted with the high level of the sump. When the power goes out my sump rises 3 inches...

i need to get something on battery backup before i leave my tank again though.

I'm working on fish room and 3 sumps and one of them will house the skimmers. It's a pain but I am going out of the skimmer housing where an external pump would go and out and through the sump wall and have the external there. This way if I get an overflow of any kind or the skimmer body springs a leak I won't lose water and have makeup water kick in. Which if I gather is what yours did.

i am down in massillon, just got power back tonight at 9:30. i do a lot of freshwater stuff, only lost one fish out of my 25+ tanks, other than a few newly hatched fry.

as far as my reef, things look promising. anemone is inflated, both clowns still swimming. bubble coral is much smaller, but inflated and has color. candycane look good, torch, frogspawn all seem alive. even saw my snails, hermits, and coral banded. i have no backup power, so i figured i would have lost the reef, but so far so good. sad to see everyone else did not make it as well as i have.
