How do I make this intake safe for the tank? Must have dropped it and the bottom of the grill broke off

A piece of sponge or netting with a rubber band is a quick fix. If you have a local club ask the members to dig through the piles of stuff that we all have laying around. A lot of times the inlet screens can be used on a different powerhead/pump.

That's about the most symmetrical 'break' I've ever seen. you sure it wasn't always like that? Unless you have really small fish, I doubt it will cause any trouble as is.

Yes there were additional bars coming out of the bottom to a point. Worried about the bta and lettuce slug getting sucked in. I'll try a sponge for now. Thanks.

I was thinking zipties as well, but leaning more towards some sort of fabric, for a cleaner install.
