powerhead placement

 Hi all, just got two new modded maxijet 1200's to put in my mixed 55 reef tank. I currently have two 301 powerhead on the back wall shooting out and a pair of maxi 400's in the front corners pointing kinda down and in. Was thinking of leaving one of the 400's in the back behind the rock and then the two modded 1200's in the front corners slightly down and aimed at the back glass to give a good current. Any thoughts on how i can maximize current but not destroy the corals? thanks billy

Leave the maxi's at the top back corners pointed towards the middle of the front glass. That should get you the best flow. Hope that helps, Wiz ;)

If I'm reading right you now have 4 power heads to work with? If so, I like the idea of having the two in the back pointing toward the middle front and I would try to get the other two possibly on the sides moving across the front of the reef.(Maybe one pointing slightly up, one slightly down?) I have a similar set up with my closed loop and it gets some great movement. Good luck, hope this gets the wheels turning!

Put one on each side pointing across the reef. Since modded maxis are somewhat powerful you might want to point them slightly towards the glass to break up the flow.

Are the 2 modded maxijet 1200's too much current for 55 gallon? Also have a return pump adding volume/current

for a 55 gal the desired flow range is 1100 to 2200 gal per hour

I believe the modded maxis are giving you around 1600 gph??
so you have quite alot of flow in that tank just with the two maxijets.

Thats seems to be the problem I am having now. Was thinking of taking the mod parts and putting them on the old mj 400's. that would give me 1200-1300 gph per pump. Still on the high end but i think acceptable. These are the small impellers, the black ones. thanks

hey i have a maxi jet that is pushing about 1600 gph only have one and this thing moves just wondering the best placement for it

Yeah but those modified maxi's are fish killers. My maxi sucked in my Sailfin, they're no joke. I'm getting ready to replace all mine w/ Koralia.

Any thoughts on something better?

Depends on what size tank you have, but corners are the usual place to put them.

Six power heads in a 55? What kind of blind rock formations do you have that make you need six separate pumps? The two MaxiJet 1200's should give you all the flow you need for SPS.

I feel like that might be a bit much flow? I have a 55 mixed reef and love my koralias. Had two koralia evolutions for a while and they gave me excellent flow. Got a nano koralia recently to get some additional flow and I really like the set up. The flow is gentle but it really moves! I don't worry about any of my little fish getting sucked in.

Just got my 55g tank set up. Right now it only contains about 25 lbs of live rock and 2 Fancy Ocellaris. Eventually I'd like to get my tank into a reef tank, but wondered what size power heads I should get. I saw from a previous poster that you should move 1600 gph? If that's the case should I get 1 power head or 2 that are about that size?

Also, if anyone can point me in the right direction on what a solid make/model would be that would be fantastic. I was looking at the Hydor Koralia Evolution 750 at a local store the other day.
