powerhead ?

so I am looking at getting a couple new powerheads since the lights are all set. and am looking at some korallia's however they are not cheap and I am seeing these types ALL over ebay.

any good? anyone got good cheaper alternatives to the korallia's??

My guess would be that those whould not stay on the glass that well. The korallia's stay on with a mag not suction cups. Much better in my opinion.

I see an immediate drawback to this eBay pump and that is the suction cups. It has been my experience that they lose their "stick" in time. I'm not a big fan of the Koralias either, but at least they are fastened with a magnet so they stay put. Because I could not afford the Vortechs and don't like the range of motion of the Koralias or the little ball joint that can come out of the socket, I used a pair of Maxi-Jets with the mod kit that increases their flow. I'm extremely happy with the flow in my tank and they are steady, reliable and affordable.

+1 IMO, I wouldn't use anything with suction cups, unless you are super diligent about keeping your glass free of algae. Inevitably the suction cups will fail, and the powerhead COULD cause some damage to coral/inhabitants. Totally jmo.

LOL..also if you think the Koralias are pricey, chk out some of the Vortechs some peeps use

you don't have to do a magnet mod- there's many ways to mod a MJ.

Easiest mod would be to shorten the discharge nozzle and (maybe) drill some intake holes around the intake screen base.

That being said, I run a Vortech MP40, a large Tunze Stream and two unmodded MJ1200's and (bang for the buck) feel that MJ's can't be beat.

Right on the magnet mounts for the Maxi Jets. Otherwise you're stuck with the darn suction cups again. I have magnets for both of mine. It adds to the cost, I'll admit, but still a very affordable pump. The magnet mounts are called Sure Grip and you can search for them on Marine Depot or Foster & Smith Aquatics (both RC Sponsors) or wherever you prefer to shop for such things.

Currently i am using 2 korallia 4s was wanting to get one of the 8s has anyone tried these and whatz the opinion on them.

I just meant a mount-mod...I have a MJ900 for return pump in the BC, but I want to add the MJ900 ph I have but don't want to use the suction cups.

Koralias can usually be foubd pretty cheap foir sale here on RC. No matter what you get, definitely stay away from the Chinese knock-offs on ebay. On top of the suction mounts people mentioned you also have to worry about stary voltage and other quality control issues

I had a MJ1200 in my 29g tank and never did the mods because it wasn't worth it in my opinion. By the time you got done spending the money on the mods, you could buy a brand new Koralia.

MJ1200 = $20 (250gph)
Mod Kit = $10
Magnet Kit = $20
Total: $50

Koralia 2 = $35 (600gph)
Koralia 3 = $45 (850gph)

I just can't see spending the money on the MJ1200+ unless the Koralias are horribly unreliable (though I haven't heard anybody complaining about them much).
