Powerheads for a 29 gallon

Hey all, I am going to make my mass order of equipment tomorrow from www.marinedepot.com I am still deciding on some powerheads for my 29 gallon. In a previous thread i was told to get 20x turnover. Does that mean 580 gph? And if so would 2 maxi-jet MP1200's work or maybe one MP900 and MP1200? Please recommend other brands as well if you think there are better. :rollface:

Based on reviews it seems like the 900's run quieter and do not get as hot. Getting two of those brings my gph to 460. Is that enough for a 29 gallon?

I do not have 1 but have read good reviews for the Hydor Koralia pumps. I am going to get 2 #2's for my 20L.

I was thinking about using a maxi and then modding it for flow, but I ended up just getting 2 Koralia 1 pumps. Works fantastic, looks cool, has phenomenal flow and if you're getting them from Marine Depot, they'd cost about the same as getting a maxi and modding it.

I have 2 rio 200's on my 20 gallon long. And 2 600's running my fuge and skimmer.

OMG I am so torn now. I was ready to get Maxi-Jets and now I can't decide between Maxi-Jet, Koralia or the Tunze nanostream 6025. arg.....

I like my MJ's, I have 2 900's and 1 1200 in a 30L, the 1200 is a bit too much, causes some sand shifting. They great at starting after being turned off. And cheap compared to some other wave making devices.

I own one and its amazing, you will never have to worry about this thing falling down off the glass or moving at all. It can be pointed in any direction and stays pointed exactly where you put it. the flow is gentle and spread out and still powerfull. Runs on hardly no electricity and is slimline and small overall. Well worth the wait, they are backorderd alot! i waited over a month for mine to ship and im glad i did!

just bought 2 hydor koralias and freakin' love them. both are the 400 gph and they're in my 20g tall.

the output is nice and broad and it's just soooo easy to adjust where you want the flow to go.

Maxis will work on a wavemaker, koralias shouldnt. Koralias have a much wider flow pattern which is better, maxis are concentrated. If it were me and i wanted great flow, 1 koralia 1 at one of the ends, and 2 maxi 600s on a cheap wavemaker, one on each side. JMO

maxi jets will work just fine, or a coupe of seio's - wide angel flow. they are cheap and use less wattage too. had mine for over a year now, flawless..

Scuba_Steve1 thats a great idea! Plus i am still torn between Maxi's and the Koralia might as well just mix the two. :rollface:

For flow I would stick with a high flow circulation pump. You'll end up with better flow everywhere. Here are some choices:

Tunze Stream - very good flow, expensive, reliable

Seio - good flow, inexpensive, I've never had any issues with mine

MJ (Modded) - very good flow, inexpensive, reliable, some do not like the looks

Hydor Koralias - If I was in the market, I would take a look at these. Look nice, and very inexpensive.

Ecotech Vortech - If I was in the market and money was not an issue . This is a really neat design!

I would go with either the Tunze or Seio. Both have been great for me. Although the Tunze's are very new as they have only been running for less than a month

I have 3 Mj1200 in my 29 gallon tank on a RedSea wavemaker and 1 MJ1200 running my skimmer. The flow is crazy, I think the 900's would be plenty.

i like my tunze nanostream, much better (more dispersed) flow then an MJ. koralias might be just as good, but i personally like the look of the tunze better.
