Powerheads

I'm setting up a 55G FOWLR . I have no experience with powerheads and I plan on having a fuzzy dwarf an eel and maybe a scorp. I'm really not wanting to spend a bunch of money. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of filtration will you be running? You may not even need a PH for the types of fish you're planning on keeping since they don't require heavy flow. In fact, it's not that hard to blow a lion around, and if it feels uncomfy, it will tend to perch out of the flow and become reluctant to swim.

Maybe I should ask what others are running in their tanks that contain lions or scorpions

i have a couple scorp tanks. my first is

standered 55 with
1 700gph aqueon
1 250gph mini aquion labeled for a bio cube for behind the rocks
Reef Dynamics INS-80 skimmer rates to 250gal
Life reef overflow 700gph
mag 9.5 return dialed back with ball valve
Eshopps sump
48" aquatice life t-5 HO 4 bulb fixture with built in timer
Fluval titanuim heater(300w)

this one houses
2 fuzzy lions
1 marine betta
1 ghost ribbon eel

another tank that is in the process of being upgraded. also is being used as a QT for the new tank 30gal tall

Eshopps PSK-75h skimmer rated to 75gal
1 850 korlia powerhead
coral life 24" PC bulb unit
Fluval titainum heater(150w i think)

this one currently houses
1 fuzzy dwarf lion
1 cockatoo waspfish
1 Fu man chu( just picked up yesterday! im ecxited!)

the tank that is replacing the one above 46 bow front
2 450 mini koralias
Reef octopus bh-1000 HOB skimmer rated to 90gal
36" aquaticlife 4 bulb t-5 HO with built in timer lights(i really liked the 48" so i got this on for this tank)

and of course just over 1lbs of rock per total gollonage of the tanks.

the 46 bow will have the tankmates of the 30gal in a couple weeks

so far all fish are a blast.

just as a heads up because i saw that you dont want to spend alot of money do not skimp on any major part of the tank cause you will just pay alot more later.

hope this helps

matt

i know what you mean im just saying. im telling you from my experience cause on my first tank i did skimp on parts and later paid for them

I have the same reef octopus as you. I've been looking at the Koralia PH's and can't find a 450 I see some that are rated at 550GPH. Have you noticed maybe too much flow where, as namxas stated, your fish become reluctant to swim? I'm not in any way saying he is wrong just would like for them to be happy. I've seen his tanks and I really think he has the living conditions dialed in.

well thier are no fish in the tank with the 450's

i dont think it will be to bad for the fish but we will see once they go in

I realize it's a personal thing, but I really dislike "equipment" in my setups, so things like heaters and PH's are automatically designed out of the DT from the start. This also makes it much easier for Renee to concentrate on taking her photos. Flow is fine if it's done creatively. For instance, in our larger systems, I typically use multiple main and CL returns. I also make use of flow alternators (gotta love SCWD's) to avoid constant laminar flow.

None of our smaller setups contain PH's at all, and the flow is provided by the AIO rear "sump" returns or HOB power filters. If I need to drive a chiller, and the tank isn't an AIO, I like to use canisters, but I get rid of the sponges, use LR rubble and a bag of carbon/chemi-pure. Every so often, if I'll use an open-ended piece of rigid airline and an air pump if I need a bit more surface turbulance.

IMHO, LR is a must for good biofiltration and I also make use of live macro algae whenever I can.

When I first put up our 100 gal, the flow bugged our adult volitans, so I re-aimed and adjusted the flow by swapping out the flares on the CL and redistributing the flow between them via the valving (there are 3 CL returns), and the lion calmed right down.

I do want to note that I run all of my pumps wide-open at all times, as I feel it's easier on the pumps.

they are the mini ones. i think their are a couple different sizes of koralias

i have gone with no power heads at the beggining. all i got was cyno and other problems

only one of my 3 tanks have a sump so a return would be hard lol.

for me it makes the food i throw in look "alive" so the fish go after it
