Prazipro not working?

Hi All,

I got a bad bout of flukes in my DT, so I started the first round of prazipro treatment today. My emporer and allards clown were by far the worst affected, especially the eyes on the allards, I believe the garlic I been adding to the nori has been a big help for the emporer.

I dosed about 8 hours ago, the two worst fish I did see having the odd convulsion as the flukes were being killed, they have stopped now, however though there is still no improvement on the eyes of the fish, and their skin. I do realise that a second and maybe a third dose would be neccessary, but I would of thought that it would be more for the eggs, but to be honest it does not seem to of made much effect to the amount of flukes on the eyes or bodies of the fish. Is this normal?

i have turned off the skimmer and reactors.

Of interest I did see a few dead copepods floating in the water about 30 mins after I dosed, but otherwise all SPS, LPS softies, shrooms, zoas, and tubeworms are all fine. The one set of shrooms did shrivel up for about 6hours, but they happy again.

I believe you're supposed to do the second dose about 10 days later.

Agreed. I use a 10 day interval between doses.

I've also seen it take a couple of days to get flukes off a fish's eye, in the case of my yellow tang it took 3 days for the eye to clear up.

You can use it as a quick bath, but the dosage is a bit more potent than normal.

Also, you could do the fresh water bath, that'll remove a large amount of pests.

Goodluck!

Follow the directions on the container for Prazipro....

Yogre, Rosh, Regal, many thanks,

I dosed about 30hrs ago, and there is not much change to what is visible on the fish, thats why I was stressing a bit. I will dose again then at day 10 and day 20.

I have had these flukes for over two months, and must say that I believe the hi garlic that I feed in the nori has helped the emporer, also the cleaners have kept the flukes at bay a bit, it is only when the clown became badly infected that I noticed it (the clown does not eat the garlic nori, or visit the cleaning station).

I did have a few dead pods drifting in the DT, but upon inspection in the sump last night, all life down below including worms is all 100%.

Still no decent signs of improvement today, it is only 48 hours though. I don't mind being patient when setting up a new tank, but am impatient when waiting for fish to heal!!!!

I don't want to put a negative vibe out there, but a bad fluke infestation really does a number on a fish. Some folks have reported their fish dying from the perforation of their skin and subsequent "bleeding out".

Hopefully that won't happen to your fish, given time and good food they'll heal.

thanks Yogre, I do actually want the fish to heal slowly, I know what you mean by the bleeding out from the flukes. My emporer is constantly at the cleaning station, so I don't think the flukes on the body are too much of a worry, it is the gills that worry me, I wonder how bad it is in there as the cleaners can't reach inside the gills, and I am worried about it bleeding to death through the gills.

Another product I came across, is Microbelift herbtana, I believe it is DT safe, but it is a herbal remendy for the fish, where the flukes end up starving, as they can't feed on the fish.

I'm not familiar with Herbtana, but I do know PraziPro will kill your flukes. Just don't forget to do the second treatment after 10 days. This will ensure that if you had an egg-laying species, the second generation of flukes will be killed after they hatch, but before they mature enough to lay eggs of their own.

Good health to you and your fishies!

It's just over two days now that I dosed the prazi (56 hours), and the fish look real bad as the flukes start shrivelling and lifting off (I presume they shrivel and lift off), it looks like a bad case of w/s. The clown does look a bit more active, it's eye's seem a bit clearer, but is what worries me is that there is so much, that the fish bleed to death. It is more noticable now on the other fish also, but they not so bad.

I am stressing that the two bad one's bleed to death, researching now, I wish I had done a few fw dips, 2-3 minutes, then increase in time to slowly get rid of the flukes bit by bit, and then prazi them, instead of nuking them in one go.

I am going to stress over the next 3 days.

Just an FYI, it says right on the bottle and in that PDF someone linked to a couple posts back to treat for 3-5 days per treatment then redose. I wouldnt wait 10 days between doses.

I've always treated the water, let it go 5 days, then done a large, like 30-40% water change, then redosed again a full dose.

After 5 more days, I ran carbon in the water and did a big water change, if I needed to retreat I would have done another double set of treatments but I've never had to retreat yet.

Anyway, I think waiting 10 days is a bad thing, you dont want to let the flukes start to recover, keep them nuked.

The 10 day interval was suggested to me by Jay Hemdal, curator of fishes and inverts at the Toledo Zoo.

His thinking is to make sure that you have a good fresh dose of Prazi in the water to kill off any flukes that hatch from eggs laid on your fish by the original flukes. I'm sure you could shorten the interval, but I'd be concerned about shortening it too much.

thanks for the tips all.

The one fish is looking worse, so I think I will do a water change tommorrow and then redose (it will be day 5). I have a feeling that I did not shake the bottle enough.

So I think it is best to redose tommorrow.
