Prazipro

Has anyone used Prazipro to treat internal parasites in fish that are in a reef tank? I have a couple of leopard wrasse that I would like to treat, since I have read that these guys usually come in with internal parasites. I have no quarantine tank set up, so that is basically out of the question.

The label cautions you to not use in reef tanks since it will harm tube worms. But if you dont have any, is it safe on your corals?? Will it harm inverts such as cleaner shrimp.

Well, someone is selling a 20L setup for dirt cheap... that would be perfect for a quarantine tank... Something that none of us should be without... even though I know most of us, if not all of us, don't have one.

I have successfully used Prazipro by gut-loading live brine shrimp...got a bag of live brine, squirted the Prazipro into the bag, waited about 30 min- 1 hr, rinsed the shrimp in RO/DI water and fed it to the tank.

I had no ill effects whatsoever. Praziquantel works specifically on nematodes...it causes them to contract very rapidly by causing a specific shift in the cell membrane permeability. This specific shift only occurs in worms, so your coral and other inverts would be unaffected.

Using the gut-loading will also minimize the amount that gets into the tank, since it is encapsulated in the brine shrimp. Rinsing the brine shrimp before feeding it will further reduce any residual praziquantel that may get into the water.

There's a lot of debate over whether this method delivers a therapeutic dose, but it worked very well for me.

OK, I'm done being a geek-pharmacist. I will now return to my usual dumb-blonde self!

HTH...
