Pre-Order: Maxspect Gyre XF130

A new, smaller Gyre will be arriving soon to Marine Depot—so we just put the pump on the site so you can pre-order and reserve a unit from our first shipment.

Here are a few of the key differences between the Gyre XF130 and the recently released XF150:

  • The XF130 has 35 watts of power versus 50 watts for the XF150.
  • The XF130 is 9" x 1.8" x 2.1" compared to the XF150's 11.8" x 2.9" x 2.4" dimensions
  • The max glass/acrylic thickness the XF130 can be used on is 1/2" versus 3/4" for the XF150

We anticipate delivery mid to late January.

What are the recommended tank sizes for this unit?

I have a new 50G Long 36x18x18 and am going back and forth between the XF150 or XF130. What would you place on your tank?

Also, concerned about the noise so was thinking go bigger XF150 and run about 10 to 15%. Would I be maxing out the smaller 130 on my tank, or would I still have to dial the 130 way down as well??

Thanks!

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your inquiry. Great tank dimensions BTW!

The XF130 should be plenty for your aquarium as it can handle tanks up to 4' and about 100 gallons. You will not be running the XF130 at 100% so it is unlikely that noise will be an issue.

We would place Gyre on either the left or right side of your aquarium about 1/4 of the way down from the top.

If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Would this be under sized for a 60"x18"x24" tank? If not what percentage would you set it at?

Hi mnkykng77,

The larger XF150 would be the better options for a 60" long aquarium. The smaller XF130 is designed for aquariums up to 48".

For a 60" long tank, the XF150 would be more appropriate. I would start at about 50-60% then adjust accordingly based on the corals and desired flow.

Just to kick my experience in here, I have the 150 placed in the horizontal position in a 65 gallon tank so 36" long and I only have to have 3 LED lights lit to get full flow through the tank. I want to say it's somewhere around 15 or 20%. This thing is amazingly awesome. If I put it at 100% nothing would be able to move and I'd have a sandstorm in my tank. These units are incredibly powerful and the options are almost endless.

I guess in the end I'm suggesting the 150 for most people unless you have under 50 gallons because you can use it in a variety of tanks with no issues. The 130 will be nice for those smaller tanks and when the 170 hits in sure it will be good for those with 250 to 300 gallons and up. Just my 2 cents.

Hi cheezybuda,

MaxSpect does advertise the smaller XF-130 to work for aquariums as small as 25 gallons. We would expect it to be an awesome option for a 60-gallon cube.

I have a 125g 72''long tank with corner overflows, so xf150 does not feet there horizontally. Will xf130 do the job, or should I go with regular wave makers?

Thank you

Hi rone_kevin66, At the extreme ends of the pump's rated capabilities, it is a little tough for us to say for certain as we have not had to chance to get our hands on one.

Due to the cube shape, we would guess that it is too powerful at this time and that a Vortech MP10 would be the better option.

However, our recommendation may need to be changed when we actually get a chance to do some testing.

BeanMachine, thanks for the love  We're wondering the same. CoralVue probably has our office number blocked and our emails flagged for harassing them so much, lol. As of this morning, we are being told that our shipment is shipping sometime next week. Once shipped, it takes 4 business days for the shipment to get to us.

codydemmel4, we tested the XF-150 in our office Innovative Marine SR-80: which is also 48" long. As the back is sectioned off for filtration, the actual display tank portion is probably about 60 gallons. The XF-150 did worked okay in our SR-80, but we did have to dial it down to about 30-40%. For your 55, the smaller XF-130 would be the better, and cheaper, option.

Thank you but I may be upgrading to a 180 gallon tank too. So I am just wondering if the 150 would work fine for a 55 gallon because if it will, I am going to buy that instead of the 130. Please let me know if it will work fine for a 55

I'm setting up a second tank that's 24x24x20. It has a center overflow. On my other cube I have 2 powerheads on each side in the back of the tank on each side of the center overflow.

What options to mount this are there? of to one side; horizontal or vertical? How would the flow work?

Hi Codydemmel4, The XF150 will work fine for a 55 gallon. Since you are planning on upgrading, we would agree with you and go ahead and go for the larger XF150.

LinkinReef, we would recommend to first try mounting it horizontal on one side of the tank about 1/4 way down from the top: which will give it a gyre flow pattern going from side-to-side. As shown below:
