preferred salt for sps keepers.

I use the Red Sea Coral Pro and the instructions tell you to add the salt to the water and not to put the salt in first and then the water. It dissolves fine for me and doesn't leave any residue anywhere. The tank water is nice and clean, perfectly clear. The ALK and CALC are good but I do suppliment with Ionic B to get the Calc up to 425 and maintain the Alk.

Interesting, i'll have to ask my friends if they were adding salt then water for some reason. I know with kent I always had some residue but not bad at all.

ohhhh reefers best is that RB2? I here good things about it, too bad on RC if it's not IO its a waste of money

Again, I stand by my "it doesnt matter"

Theyre all pretty good, and none of them are perfect. Pick one, mix up a big batch, and test it. Supplement what its off, and you're done.

IO is low in Ca, yes, but calcium is absurdly cheap to supplement (50lb bag of peladow is like $4). I can fix that. TM is high in copper. I can't fix that.

I've used IO for a year and the freshly mixed IO was always way too low on calcium and alk. This cost me extra $ to supplement back in before the WC.

In addition, I would be cautious about using IO for large WC (during emergencies etc). I've read of two other cases (Steve Weast, another dude here on RC) and myself. I believe it has something to do with the high pH of ASW mixed with IO.
Steve weast's was more then just the salt...he also felt that it was due to not using his RO machine and old dechlorinizer (spelling).

This is just like anything else with this hobby, there is more then one way to skin a cat in this hobby. If you have found something that works for you that is great.

To some of the people talking about different salt prices, the TMP comes in normal and reef...and I am pretty sure that the reef stuff is more then 57 bucks a bucket.

All I can say is...if you have a reef, you might be a little better off with a "reef" salt and if not then no need to spend the extra cash and just the the regular stuff.

People claim to have problems with salt, but there are a ton of variables that are not taken into account of what could have something to go wrong...

I'm using Reef Crystals, and IO depending on which I can get my hands on at the time. I've been thinking of switching to HW..... ...but I really don't see any compelling reason to.

i mix mine, 2 parts red sea coral pro, 1 part IO, 1 part oceanic, with that combo i think all bases are covered. and corals respond well to the mix. i have tried all on their own and have not had as much success as mixing all of them together. all levels are in check although at times i have to supplement with ca, due to high sps load.

They're all different, and if you change, you should know what the differences are so you can compensate - with buffering, etc.
I wouldn't change unless you are having problems, or you have an availability problem.

oh yeah thats too much for only 150 gallons for me. I can get tropic marin for only $57 and thats for 200 gallons. Unless Bio-seas is that much better?

is this an online price? did you include shipping?

I use TMP

Yeah fosters & smith sells it and I buy a bunch of buckets so the shipping is either $4 a bucket or free for all buckets after 4 buckets have been added to the cart.

Anyway Rich, TM is high in copper? isn't that deadly for invertebrates? That's a big deal! You have personally tested a batch? and its not in your RO water I take it?
That's bad if so, and I have a hard time believing it since so many reef tanks use it and I can't believe the smart folks at TM don't realize this is happening?

Salts

Salts

I'm trying to think of all the salts I've used a bunch of them. I rate a salt bascially one 2 things;

1) No adverse effects
2) It mixes up with NO supplementation

My theory is if you have to supplement to get you're numbers, you're using an inferior product, it's not like salt choices are hard to find as there are probalby 50 of them in the US, find on that is mix and go.

Goal Numbers
400 calc
8 dkh (natural sea water)
1250-1350 MG
350+ Potassium
No hits on the nitrate, phosphate test
No salt I've bought has had bad effects.

The salts I've used that meet or exceed these numbers (sorted roughly by price).
Seachem
Red Sea Coral Pro
Kent (no potassium test)
Bio-Sea Marinemix
TM Pro (no potassium test)
Reefer Best Salt v2

Salts I've used that haven't (disappointing)
Instant Ocean
Coralife
Reef Crystals
HW Marinemix
Trop Marin (normal)

I don't know what salt I'll try next, I haven't tried Aquamedics RS yet, OceanPure, probably some more.

I guess with those list I'd go with Seachem or Red Sea Coral Pro if you want something cheaper that will mix up okay w/o supplements or other hassles.

An interesting tidbit I learned was salts mix fast when they are lower or closer to normal SW Mag levels.
If you add more mag to compensate for loss then it takes longer to mix and it makes the bucket of salt larger because it takes a lot to make mag, thats a large part of the salt anotherwords.

I use regular tropic marin. Stuff works fine for me. I don't see what the big deal is personally.

The only one I really am against is Oceanic. That stuff is just nasty and I had to return a bucket. It was known that is caused some serious nasty algae. They even acknowledged it with me on the phone and I received a refund.

[lol thats funny, I used IO for years, I had good results, but I dont recall great growth, I did'nt add any calcium for over 6 mo. No idea if this is salt related. I like how the RBS is low in alk and high in k. And it's got a pretty blue tint to it!, But to each is own, I just started using the RBS, I use to use nsw but it's a pain going and getting it sometimes. It does scare me with the nsw you never know what your getting. The parameters fluctuate also.

And it's got a pretty blue tint to it ??????????
Why would it have a blue tint?
Does it stay like that? Like tidy bowl or something :)
