Pregnant Peppermint Shrimp had its BABIES!!!!!

Its been twelve days since the baby peppermints have hatched, and I'm expecting the mother to have her babies very soon. The babies haven't changed alot, they are just eating adn growing about 1 mm every four to five days or so.

Here are the last of the pictures.

This is another baby, its eyes are at the bottom and it is facing down. Thats how they swim, facing down or swimming upside-down.

This is the same picture without the outline:

These are the last of the pictures of the ten day old babies that I took. If you want any of the above photos with or without an outline around them, feel free to ask, I am more than happy to edit photos and post them here.

Yeah, its because I had to zoom in so much in the picture, and the 6 megapixels isn't really enough.

I have been observing the baby shrimp for a while, and those long things aren't their claws like I said. There claws are actually pretty small and are right below the eyes and antennae and next to their non-swimming legs. I am not sure what those things are, they don't seem to use them at all and those things are paddle-like.

Yeah, some of the pictures do look like paintings because I had to zoom in alot to get that close to some of the images, also, my photoshop makes the colors burst out when I fix them up, My 6 megapixel camera isn't quite enough to take good pictures of them.

Anyway, I have been observing the babies lately and noticed that those things that I said were claws weren't. There claws are actually pretty small and are right next to their non-swimming legs, which is how they grip onto their food. Those things that I said were its claws are paddle shaped and are bendable. I am still not sure what they use those for. Maybe for balance

Peppermint Shrimp Mother Had her 2nd Batch of Babies

Peppermint Shrimp Mother Had her 2nd Batch of Babies

She had them two nights ago, I just wasn't here to post about it. Anyway, I didn't take the mother out like the first time because I didn't want to stress her, so I put a nightlight over the tank to attract the babies to the surface and removed them with a turkey baster. I was able to retrieve about 80 of them, the others were eaten by my three clownfish. So now I have about 110 babies, well I used to, but I think after the first day, a couple of them die off.

The first batch of babies are doing great. They are huge compared to the two day old babies. They are now about 15 days old, it feels kind of strange calling the older ones babies, becasue they seem so big now. They are doing well with the younger babies, even though they will try to eat the younger ones, but they are too big still. The older ones are now able to catch their own food, by swimming toward it and snatching it with their small claws.

Heres a size comparison shot of the two of them side by side(tell me if there is no image on this page):

Hope You like them, I used a different setting in the camera that works so much better, and used a mirror to reflect the flash down on them.

:) :)

Very cool! I have a pregnant peppermint right now, I have a feeling the babies will become clownfish food though...

Well, if your interested in breeding them, then the mother will have her babies at night, so that kind of helps if the clownfish are asleep. And the clownfish pick at he babies very slowly, one every 10 seconds. If you put a flashlight/nightlight at the top, the babies will get attrated to it, then you can remove them with a turkey baster, if you want to breed them, which is quite easy.

Anyway, I just saw something really strange, the mother that has had her babies three days ago is pregnant again, but the strange thing is, the other peppermint is pregnant too! He looks like he'll have babies in the next 3-6 days, though its really hard to predict when. So I guess they can change sexes/store sperm and keep having babies.

I have decided that I should double the amount of brine shrimp that I raise. I usually have eggs in a one liter bottle, but I'm thinking I should double it to two liters and double the amount of salt and the eggs, becasue I have so many babies now, alot are dying off, even when I feed them so much brine shrimp. So I have around 70-80 left.

The newest batch of peppermints are now four days old, the oldest being 17 days old. I have about 60 babies left, and I am expecting more around monday-Wednesday, from another pregnant peppermint.

try feeding small amounts of crushed flake food, see how they react. they should grab the flake food and eat off it, this would be much easier than mass producing brine shrimp. but keep up with the brine shrimp and make sure you syphon any detritus to keep the tanks clean.

I tried the crushed flake food, and they nip at it, like with all foods, but its not as good as frozen mysid and brine shrimp, because they stay afloat longer.

The oldest batch is now 20 days old, and the newest being a week old. I have about 40 babies left, I didn't add enough brine shrimp eggs when I doubled my amounts, which resulted in me not having enough brine shrimp, but I started a new batch with the right amount of eggs.
