Pressure Pumps

I keep hearing about pressure pumps to run certain venturi/beckett driven skimmers. I have a couple of questions:
a) what’s a pressure rated pump and how is it different from, lets say, a Mag pump?
b) all my searched for such a pump returned non submersibles â€"œ “plumb outside” kind of pumps like Little Giant. What would be the equivalent submersible/in sump pump?

I'm pretty sure that there's no submersible pressure rated pump. If there is, then I'll be ****ed. Since I've been working on installing a external pump for the last month. You can overshoot the target gph with a submersible. My beckett skimmer need at least 1000gph, Instead of an Iwaki I went with a dart. I could of went with a danner pro hy drive that would push the same gph as the dart, but the energy use is double.

Iwaki, sequence and panworld make pressure rated Pumps. Pan world also uses the name blue line and the coralife pumps are made by them also from my understanding. There are more, but I can't think of them right now. They usually say they are pressure rated.

So looks like there isn’t any submersible pressure rated pumps but overshooting the target GPH with a submersible pump should achieve the desired skimming action. Thanks all.

Not exactly. A lot of pumps fall apart when contronted with the head required to run a beckett.

The dart is a little different, and although recomended by some beckett skimmer companies, they too are a little inefficient when it comes to driving a beckett, but work.

Ok, so if I didn’t have a choice and had to run a beckett driven skimmer (like MRC) in sump, what would be the recommended pump? Mag 12?

It will work, but you will never reach a beckett's potential IMO/IME with a mag...

Better off IMO selling the beckett and running an octopus, if you cannot plumb a pressure pump. Even an up and over plumbing job from the sump to an external pump would work fine;) And then you can see what a beckett will really churn out!

i run 2 rio HF 20 pump in sump with dual Beckett skimmer......seems to work quite well enough for me.....N03 and P04 has been maintance at a level no detectable by test kits......so even if not at max potential, its still quite acceptable for me....
