Pretty discouraged

My 30g tank which was on fire for a month (tons of coral growth, great PE, fish were getting nice and fat) took a turn for the worst. Cyano like you wouldn't believe. I did a 3-day no light cycle then waited two weeks and did another 3-day no light cycle.

There was a mass-fish die-off. I made two large Live Aquaria purchases roughly two months ago. I had at 12 fish in the tank. Now I'm down to a Tomato Clown, Tail Spot Blenny, Clown Goby, Watchman goby, engineer goby. Lost gorgeous High-Fin Goby, both my Court Jester and Hector's goby, two green clown gobies, peppermint shrimp, 2 engineer gobies, etc

I can't keep up with the tank anymore. I've been working 80-90 hour weeks, feeding once a day. I leave before the lights are on and I'm home long after they've been off. I haven't been enjoying it, to say the least. I can't even keep up with water changes and mixing fresh salt - I don't think that I have done a water change in 5 weeks (probably a good reason why I'm losing livestock and what I attribute to the downturn). Working 12+ hour days every day for the last month has ruined the tank and I don't know if I'm going to have the time to bring it up to speed within the next month either.

I may consider selling off some livestock, LR, and live sand - keep posted for a selling list. Probably going to do an AIO 10g nano and stick with low maintenance Cichlid tanks for a while.

that stinks, and I thought I had it rough with work! Are you still going forward with the paludarium?

All supplies are purchased and have been sitting in the tank waiting for use for a week now. Haven't had the time at all.

I know, the fish loss kills me the most. Cyano I can come back from, coral receding or taking a hit I can understand, but my beautiful fish....

Try vodka dosing cleared my cyno out in a week and tank looks amazing and havnt done a water change in over two months fish are perfect Sty for ur loss wish u luck if you need anything don't be afraid of asking
 
Sorry to hear about your loss. Seems to be white a bit of that going around lately. Hopefully you can get a little down time here and there to do a little maintenance and keep it going. Good luck to you. Wish I could help more than just this and again I'm sorry for the loss. Hang in there
 
I know how you feel man. My schedule has been killing me as well and my tank has paid for it. I'm thinking about just go FOWLER since I can't sem to sell my tank.
 
Stick in there buddy. If the cyano is still there I've found siphoning out as much as you can without stirring it up (along with the lights off) to help a ton.
 
very sorry to hear another sad reefer, hang in there.. tell the boss you need a raise large enough to pay someone to upkeep the reef for ya:)
 
I'm sorry about your fish loss too, but twelve fish in a 30 Gallon? I think the start of your problems was too heavy a bio-load on such a small tank. If you begin again, cut way back on the number of fish you keep. I have six fish, none of them very large, in a 60 gallon.
 
Also sorry to hear about your troubles... But will agree, your fish stock is completely outta hand and much too high... 2 or 3, or 4 small fish is the most really, regardless of size...
 
I think 12 fish in a 30g is a lot. Probably to many with the bioload the bacteria probably could keep up and that may have cause the problem

Going FOWLR doesn't reduce the maintenance. Mine is more trouble than my coral tanks. It's feeding the fish that causes the algae and cyano, but even if you try corals without fish, you still have to feed your corals, consequently you still have a lot of maintenance. You're trapped regardless of what you choose. Of all my little experiments, I think my softies tank is the easiest. It has two little fish and the livestock is very forgiving, some varieties even prefer dirty water. I can go a month without cleaning it. Try that route if you're low on time.
