Preventing Old Tank Syndrome

would using a diatom filter work even better than a fine micron sock or would it be the same?
Oh Yeah a diatom filter has a really strong outflow.

It puzzles me why most reefers try to acheive random flow when most reefs actually have lamalar flow.
It puzzles me why they all don't have UG filters also. I guess it's just me

Thanks Paul, after reading this thread I removed a few inches of DSB from both corners of my tank and also ran a comb thrugh the DSB from one end to the other to stir the DSB.Also removed LR from my sump.Tank has cleared up and looking much better.Earlier I had po4 issues and use to change GFO every two days.Lets see whether po4 will reduce after the cleaning.Thinking of stirring the DSB everytime I do a water change to remove all detritus.Tank is now more than 5yrs old.

OK but I am not sure how that will work out, some old DSBs you can't stir because of the gasses they contain.

So you wouldn't recommend stirring the DSB.If I remove the DSB and reduce the amount of DSB will it work.Earlier I had 4-5 inches DSB and now reduced it to 2-3 inches.

Noted,I did notice that tank is crystal clear and po4 has remained 0.00 for 02 days which was not the norm last few months.
