I am in NS Canada, close to the OP and flames seem to run $60 at LFS or $80 at PU. Given that everything tends to be more expensive in Newfoundland, I am not surprised by the added cost.
I have had fish shipped to me from both J&L and Aqua Valley and have nothing but good to say about the quality of the livestock I have received from both of them. Be warned that shipping coast to coast in Canada in the winter is a crap-shoot at best due to the weather. Pay to have extra heat packs in your order and be prepared to delay shipping until you are positive that the weather will be cooperative everywhere between the company and your location and any stops enroute. It took me over a week to get my last order shipped between Ottawa and Halifax due to weather, patience is key.
One order was shipped as freight on an airline and went into limbo for 12+ hours, around 30 hours total in the bag. I should note that this was the shipping companies mistake, not the supplier's. Everything was alive and has survived but the temp was down under 70 degrees when I received it and the fish were pretty stressed, laying docile in the bottom of the QT tank for almost 24 hours before they became active and would feed a little. Another order was shipped next-day FedEx and arrived at my door 18 hours later warm and healthy.
Unless you are planning on buying multiple fish or doing a group buy, the cost of shipping alone will easily exceed $60.00 even for a single fish. You might be better off biting the bullet and supporting your LFS, assuming it is worth supporting of course.
