I want to get a mantis shrimp, but for hitchhikers, they are so expensive, why is this
price

they are in demand and hard to come by unless you don't want one

Hitchhikers aren't expensive, people usually just give them away or trade them for a frag or something.
The expense is in the shipping, since you have to ship next day so that the animal will survuve.
Look on the local forums, in the search. There may be someone local to you who accidently picked one up.
