Prime Real Estate Available ... for a lucky clownfish pair

Now on the market is prime clownfish real estate with a very large rose anenome with a commanding view of my living room from a spacious 240 DT! :hmm5: A life of affluence awaits the lucky residents. I am interested in feedback in selection of the lucky residents ... clownfish residents that is.

1. What type of clownfish do you suggest?
2. Can I count on a pair to eventually become a mated pair?
3. Do you suggest purchasing a mated pair to begin with?
4. Do you suggest more than 2?
5. Do you think it's worth the money to purchase the higher end clownfish (such as snowflake clownfish FS for $119 ea at my LFS)
6. I am of the opinion to avoid the Clarki's and Tomato's due to trend of aggressiveness, do you agree? Will any clownfish pair become aggressive with mating?
7. Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance! :bounce1:

They have a great list of what clown naturally matches which anemone, although plenty of people get non-natural matches with BTAs.

From what I understand basically all the clowns outside of ocellaris can get very aggressive, that said if I had a tank that large I would get a pair of gold bar maroons because I personally think they are one of the more impressive clown types although they can get very big and be very mean.

The fancy clowns (snowflake like you mentioned) are in my opinion a way for people to take what I would say are the two most popular species in ocellaris and perculas and breed interesting morph traits to make them more unique. Don't get me wrong, I have a pair of ocellaris clowns, one orange/white one black/white and I love them because of how entertaining they are but those snowflake with the strong blue coloration are pretty sweet.

I have two Gold Stripe Maroons who are still getting used to one another. I'm hoping they mate, which it looks like they will. They have not been nearly as aggressive as I was told they would be. For my other tank, I'm planning on a pair of Ocellaris. Best of luck finding your residents!

Any clownfish that start to breed will become at least somewhat aggressive. If not to other fish, they may to you. My female ocellaris will chase me around the tank and bite my hand. She's drawn blood multiple times. She's even latched onto my finger and went for a bumpy ride when I pulled my hand out of the tank quickly. She's went onto the hardwood floors a few times. My clarkii pair will both bite the long plastic grabbers I use to rearrange things in their tank.

Only you can say if the snowflakes, picasso, or designer clownfish are worth the money. Some people don't like the way they look, and others will pay a premium for them. It's all in what you like.

I would say go with your heart and what you like. I love all clowns. It looks like you want an adult pair or a good sized wild caught pair that is already mated I do have a few favorite like blue stripes, tricinctus (three stripe) and Latz. Most of the time these pairs will darken as they ate. But using a bubble tip will keep them light colored. You could go with a wild caught adult or medium pair that would jump right into your nem. Sometimes tank bred will ignore the nem for a few days to months to never.
If you want a wild caught pair then I would visit ibluewater.
I got many pairs from them and they are the best in the business. They have every clown for sale.

I wouldn't say every clown. They do have a large selection though.

If one of your drivers is to see a cute pair of clowns cozying up to one another, you may wish to spring for a mated pair. Trying to pair up clowns takes patience...it is rarely love at first sight and generally entails a fair amount of nipping and chasing until it is decided who gets to be the girl. With maroons, this process can sometimes prove fatal to the less dominate fish. As to which breed, as others have said, it depends on what you like. iBluewater has some great hybrids as does AlphaCorals and Doni's reef. DD also has some premium hybrids...at a premium price. Have fun, I am sure a pair of clowns are soon to enjoy some very nice new digs!!!

You don't absolutely have to go with wild-caught fish to get a mated pair. Divers' Den offers captive-bred pairs from ORA and Sustainable Aquatics on a regular basis. My LFS can order pairs of clowns (including rarer species like nigripes) from Sustainable Aquatics. Captive-bred clowns tend to be healthier and easier to acclimate, and you're not removing a breeding pair from the wild.

Perfect .. I really appreciate all the prospective ... and feedback. I will research Alpha, Doni's, ibluewater, and Diver's Den ... as well as the wifeonerd site and of course my budget! I'll post the final decision here when the time comes, thanks again.
