Problem with 6080

My Tunze 6080 just stopped working... It runs for a little while when plugged in and then it just stops working... It will start each time I plug it in and then it just shuts off within a minute or two. I have tried multiple power strips and it is the tunze... Is it the impeller or the unit itself? I looked at the impeller and it looked fine to me... What is the contact number to call for warranty support as I purchased two of them from marine depot. I have heard of their legendary support and that is why I purchased their products... I own 3 6080s in total... Thanks again

Have you cleaned the impeller based on the pics in this thread, if not it is the first thing to try and the cause of many such problems. The 6060/6080 I would clean them every 6 months, the 6060/80 tend to calcify on the impeller and such a bit quicker than the controllable versions.

No I have not... I will do so today and report back. Thanks as I did not see the directions, do you soak your tunze in some vinegar and water solution also during the cleaning? If so, what is the ratio of vinegar (white vinegar) to salt water or do you use fresh water? Thanks

I use regular vinegar to soak everything, either straight to 50/50 solution, just use regular fresh water if you dilute. If the coraline and such is heavy and you want them to look "new" I would use it straight

Thanks Shawn... You're the best, what do you mean by regular vinegar? Do you mean the clear white vinegar or what exactly as I do not want to be wrong. Thanks again Shawn

My 6060 needs cleaning every couple of months as I get a lot of calcium collected on mine (from kalk).

Anyway, I wanted to mention that there is a cleaning guide.

Thanks for that link. I ment to and thought I put it in the first post but I noticed when you posted this I did not.

If it is over a few months old cleaning may solve it. These pumps have a thermostatic cut off. Basically, if the pump overheats because there is too much friction from debris, lime build up or broken parts the pump shuts off. After it cools it will restart.

Thanks RVitko... I was wondering if Shawn meant that I could also clean the outside of the tunze 6080 (The black plastic screen like exterior and the outside of the pump body the black part) in the vinegar solution as well? I did not want to melt them in the vinegar by accident. Thanks again guys!

I opened it up and I have the impellers out, but the bearing thing that the impeller sits over seems to not come out of the 6080... It has a small hole in it for the bottom of the impeller's raised part fits into... How do you get the bearing out? Or does it even come out? Thanks

I decided to clean all 3 of the 6080s which I have... One of their impeller drives appears to have 2 large chips in the plastic prop piece... I may need to get another one of them. I am soaking them for 1 hour in vinegar and I will then clean them and re-assemble and report back.

Well I am pretty ****ed... The cheap small plastic screws that hold the prop on snapped the heads off when i was re-installing them. They sure do get a lot of pressure on them when we are re-installing them... I will need 3 new screws before I can test them now... I am surprised at how flimsy the screws were at their heads...

It appears that the white neck piece on the one impeller has some stripped threads on it and that caused the screws to pop off as i tried two screws in that prop and both heads popped off the screws...

In general there is no reason to ever remove the screws, they are graphite reinforced nylon and there is nothing better that could be used, likely some calcium cemented them in place, if they were cross threaded they probably would have snapped when being installed. For a temporary repair I would try a bit of silicon. On Monday we can get some parts out to you.

Ok so I went to Lowes and purchased the two screws that were broken they were size 8-32 x 1/2"... I plugged in all 3... They were all working VERY well as Tunzes do and then all of a sudden the one that was broken before, stopped working again... It must be more severe than just the cleaning as you could eat off it now and it still shuts off after running for 1-4 minutes... Now what should I do? Thanks again
