Problems with Tunze 9002

I bought a new Tunze 9002 last night and I have been having problems setting it up. When I first set it up in the tank I had the water level even with the line on the 9002 and plugged it in...I heard bubbles for a few seconds and then nothing (I pulled off the collection cup and saw water coming out of the airline). I then pulled the unit out, checked out the lines, made sure the pump worked and tried again...same thing. After going through this a few times I started pulling the 9002 out of the water while it was still plugged in and it started bubbling. I soon realized that I had to keep the units water line at least a half an inch above the water for it to produce any bubbles at all. Now with that solved I tried adjusting the valve to get foam but I couldn't get it to produce any...when I remove the collection cup I see slight foam/bubbles inside the unit, but I can't get it to rise. If I try to lower the unit in the water to adjust, it stops producing any bubbles and I have to pull it out to start it up again. Also, the unit is very noisy.

Am I doing something wrong?

The noise is from water in the airline, it sounds like the venturi is defective, part 9002.400. I can send you one, it is fairly simple to replace. Just PM me your name and address.

I received the new venturi, installed it and still couldn't get the unit to work. I then shortened the airline hose and that seemed to do the trick. The unit is now making foam, but it's still really load. The noise now is more of a hissing...if I cover the vent hole under the collection cup (opposite the screw hole) the noise decreases. Can I keep this hole covered? Is there something else I need to do or will the noise decrease as the unit breaks in.

I keep reading about how quiet these units are so there seems to be something wrong with mine...

The only things that can cause a loud hiss are a kinked airline or being submerged too deep. Make sure the actual water line is 1/2- 3/4" below the marked water line and that the hose is not kinked below the top cover the cup sits on. I would remove the top cover and pull the airline through from the bottom until there is no slack in the upper chamber. It will make a very slight hiss but nothing that you would hear from more than a few feet from the tank.
