Procedure for cycling tank with household ammonia.

Is it feasible to cycle a tank using plain ole household ammonia? I've set-up a QT system of 65 gal and was thinking of using this as a source of ammonia instead of feeding it food. There is some rock and sand in the tank but it is all sterile so I'll get no help there. Tanks already been up and running a week now and I have put some food in there over the last couple of days.

Certainly is doable. I usually use lab grade, but that is because it's usually already available to me in the lab ;) The household stuff is fine, though. I'd try starting with a cap full and testing after about an hour, dose until you get a reading around 1ppm and then wait for it to go down. As it drops, you can add some more to beef up the bacterial population. Figure it will take at least a good 6 to 8 weeks to cycle.

As long as the product doesn't contain any detergents, fragrances, or other additives, it should be fine to use. That said, a bit of fish food will do the same job.

Very good, thankyou guys.
I don't have any protein based flakes so I was using frozen mysys, that stuff is a little pricey and I have plenty of ammonia around the house to use. As long as there are no harmful side effects.
