Project 1 smalish 1100 gallon fish only with life rock

The glass will be laminated safety glass and will have a 7 year warrenty on it by the builder so not too worried about it for now.

as someone new to the hobby I absolutely love projects like this. I look forward to doing something like this on my own. My girlfriend and I just checked out your photos and love it!! good luck and I cannot wait to watch this progress.

we are still hovering between using 8 or 10 as due to the depth of the tank we need to hang them a bit closer to each other to have a good spread as low as possible down below the tank so we are a bit more leaning towards 10 though we had 8 first in mind for sure..... maybe some of the real light experts can chime in?
 
I would go with 10. I have 5 over my 360, which is a similar footprint and only 24" tall.

You will probably need optics to get them to penetrate as far as you need, so you'll need the extra units.
 
looks like the first project will be a go. Need to clear some last details with the client but I think we can start building very soon.

ok as we have received the green light for this project we have started with the build of this project.
Some pictures of the stand and the sump that will be sitting inside the stand

chamber 1 obviously with the 3 holes for filtersock.
water vwill run through chamber2 which is the top corridor bringing the water to the other side of the sump. This corridor will be filled with more life rock so water will go through some extra biological filtration. Chamber 3 will hold 2 Reef Octopus REGA 300int skimmers rated at 3000liter (790gallon) each. Next chamber will have one more skimmer so total skimming rating from all 3 skimmers will be over 9000liter (2300gallon) to end up in the last chamber where 4 Jebao DCT12000 pump will take care of return and water supply to chiller.
 
we like to use a higher capacity with more than 1 skimmer so in case something happens to one we still have a sufficient capacity to keep the system on a high enough skimming capacity. its more like a safety system.
As for effectiveness it is the same it would be the same volume of water going through 1 or 3 skimmers.

Dirk, I think it was on the Dutch forum I once read that studies have shown that the effectiveness per skimmer drops when using multiple ones. Why not using one skimmer with an alarm and a back-up skimmer for replacement?
 
Congrats on the new business Dirk! Are you still spending long amounts of time at sea? Very interested in your multi skimmer approach, as I am building a system that will be added to over time, and increase from 350, to 750, to 1200 gallons. I am planning for an oversized skimmer at 350, but ending up with 3 skimmers in the total package.
