Project 58!! (Image intense)

Thanks Alou...I know what you mean about upgrading....
I have a friend who bought an acrylic tank after she bought her Oceanic 120 RR...she's pestering me hard to take that tank off her hands.
Who am I kidding, she doesnt hafta twist my arm to make me take the tank.
I have space issues (and money issues) which are preventing me from upgrading at the moment.

I really like Clayton Pet alot as well...but its also the most convienant to get to for me. Pretty much all of the stores have something good going for them...
It would be nice if Aquatic Treasures and Marine systems were closer to my house to though.

Lunch, it is way too soon. Figure about September..... ;)

Max, he's right. You need to update us please. :)

I'm just kidding that we "have" to wait 6 months for an update. It was late when I posted that. The Silly Hour. :o

i thought that is what you meant but i didn't have enough coffee by the time i read you post...so i was out of it :D

hopefully we can get an update SOMEDAY soon :D

Hey Guys....sorry for kinda ignoring this thread....Couple of things...

Things got pretty busy for awhile and my tank started having troubles en masse....sigh...not single spies, but in battalions...of course you guys know this, but I was quite happy just watching you guys go thru issues and not actually really having any to speak of...

Okay, so to update fully...the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The pinched mantle thing with the clams was annoying to say the least. The gorgeous Teardrop Crocea did not make it, but the blue on did.

I'd been having some off and on RTN issues....

I really think it was a pH issue, cause I started dosing Kalk, and actually managed to stop an RTN'ing coral midway through....it doesnt look pretty or particularily happy right now, but at least its still alive.

I got red bugs. Yay for my side.......
I've done one treatment of Interceptor and will do the other tomorrow, (approximately 96 hours after the first). I have my two blood shrimp, most of my hermits, (missed one somehow...found him yesterday...didnt make it.) and my two acro crabs in a 10 gallon tank. Getting the smaller acro crab out of the Chesterfieldensis, (peach tipped acro tentative ID) was amazingly difficult. Took the better part of 15 minutes and he lost one claw and a leg I think. Getting the larger one out of the Hyacinth table (brown table tentative ID) was really easy by comparison..took about three minutes and it actually hopped out of the coral into my hand....okay so I was poking him with a knife blade to get him out of the center of the coral, but still....
The first interceptor treatment went well, and I dont see any RedBugs anywhere in the tank, but I'm going to do a second one just in case. I need to buy another bucket of IO, cause I dont have enough to do a 20% water change that is reccomended after a treatment....
Once I do the second one, everyones going back in the tank.

My RBTA's split again...this time into 3...so I now have 4 smaller anemones instead one bigger one. I'll be keeping three, one decided to go wandering, so I tucked him into a tupperware container I drilled lots of holes into for water flow. He will go to a friend of mine here in St Louis.

The Cleaner Wrasse dissappeared one day, never to be found. The tank is coverd with egg crate and Poly Cloth which is a plastic screen zip tied to the egg crate. The fish couldnt have jumped out. I checked the overflow repeatedly and never saw him hanging out there...and just for sake of elimination, checked the floor behind/near/around the tank and did not see anything resembling a dried out cleaner wrasse. Which only means one of three things:
1...I havent found him yet.
2...He didnt jump out
3...He jumped out and one of the dogs ate him.

Finally and most upsetting...the Bellus angel didnt make it. She started having swim bladder problems right around the time the rest of this was going on in the tank, and wasnt able to eat nearly as much as she had been. I think that between the Swim bladder issues, (not able to swim well at all and wedging herself under rocks to keep from floating around the tank) she wasnt able to get enough nutrition. I fed her specifically and she still didnt make it....

So the tanks fish population is currently the Tomini Tang, a Royal Gramma, and the Chalk Bass. A pair of Clowns for the many anemones is going in the tank next, (might be a few months though....wedding is coming up and finances are getting stretched) and I'm debating whether or not to try a pair of Neon Gobies. I want some blue in the tank, they are attractive, act as cleaners, dont add significantly to the bio load, and are blue...which this tank kinda needs. But I'm worried about the Gramma eating them, and wondering if feeding them will be difficult due to the way the other fish "mob" the turkey baster during feeding time.

The tank is now stable and corals are showing increased growth and polyp extension. I'd like to put a few frags in the tank, and then just let everything grow out for a few years till I can afford to set up that 120 glass tank, and rectify all the things I dont like about this set up. ( Dont ya hate that??? Ya spend months planning, and deciding exactly how you want the tank laid out so that its perfect, and then in the course of a few months, you find 3-4 things that are annoying that you'd change if you could?)
Anyway...thats it in a nutshell guys.

Eventually, I'll be starting another thread, (a link to it will be posted here) with the pics on a more secure/stable site that doesnt randomly move the images thus destroying any thread I have started here on RC....

Thanks for the reality-check, er... I mean the update Nick.

I'm sure it will get better. If it was easy, I doubt we'd still be in the hobby. :p

maxx - sorry to hear you've been having problems buddy. glad to hear from you though. lets hope all this things are figured out and stuff will start growing well.

as for adding the crabs back in...i would wait a day or two after the treatment. just to be safe. do your water change run carbon, then the next day change the carbon and add them either later that day or the day after...would hate to have you loose some of those nice crabs.

keep us posted w/ some pics

later buddy

Acropora micropthalma and Larry Jackson Tri-color, (sadly, the LJ Tricolor was hit hard by Redbugs and the top half of the largest frag died. It appears to be making a slow comeback though.)

I also managed to talk the LFS owner into giving me a badly distressed coral. She had received it a couple of months ago and it wasnt doing so well. Infact well over a third of the coral had died. Here are pics of it when I first got it.

Here is a pic of the Tiger Striped Derasa Clam I picked up from Reef Science. I've always loved the way these look. Its got a blue rim.

Some before/after and growth shots

If/when I use a species name in conjunction with a coral in my tank, its really just aguess based on pictures of other corals that closely resemble mine. Its not at all scientific, and I honestly cant be sure the names I'm using are correct. It does however help keep track of corals in the tank. Instead of referrring to Unknown Acro #27, I can say, the Chesterfieldensis....etc.

Finally, the rescue coral on 06-24-05

Rescue2_06-24-05.JPG

Fragged from dead skeleton and epoxied to rockwork 08-07-05. This is only one piece. I mounted frags from this onto two seperate rocks, and for some reason only took pics of the left side yesterday...again, when the lights come on, more pics will follow.

Finally,
The Royal Gramma enjoys hanging out under the large Lava rock on the left side of the tank. Whats interesting to me, (and everyone else who see's it and wonders whats going on) is that he does so, upside down. Its a behavior they display in the wild, but not typically in captivity. I just thought it was cool and would post up a pic of it.

Here he is leaving and turning right side up....

Thanks Marc!

I'm pretty much gonna sit tight and watch em grow...
Might add another clam or two, and the pair of Percs, then this tank is full and then its just time to watch things grow in.

Nick

wow Nick, looks like everything is doing really well for you... it also apears that you have some since frag trading items come this fall...

T'was good seeing you again BTW keep us posted on the tank

Chris

nice buddy...we definatly NEED to trade sometime :D you grow yours i'll grow mine then switch :D

looks awesome

Dang, I thought I was the only one who had a Tomini Tang in St. Louis. Its always been my favorite tang, and is actually one of the first fish that got me into saltwater. Nice fish.

Chris,
I'm hoping to the corals will cooperate with me enough to be able to frag some of them when the meetings start up again. You'll definately be able to get some frags...It was great seeing you again and meeting your wife finally. She must have thought you were in trouble or something when I called out to you guys...
:D

Eric,
I'm in man!! Just say when and we'll start to figure out the logistics of it. Cause you've definatley got some things I'd be interested in....Efflo/Soli, Deepwater jacquelinae/elegens....etc...

I'm already planning on upgrading to a 120, so I will be needing some coral frags to fill in the spaces when that gets set up and running. Prolly be abit though...gotta buy a house first.

Letmegrow,
I thought I was the only one in St Louis with a Tomini!! Where did you get yours from? Got any pics to post? Feel free to post some of them up here man! I'd love to see them.

Nick
