Project External Glass Overflow

This skimmer is amazing. Works like a champ pulling the crud out.

Thanks! There is a 1" wide strip of reinforceing glass across the top back of the tank. Thats really my only concern since I questioned the integrity by dremeling slots. I'm not conerned with the removal of the plastic frame from the top since it was mainly there for looks and to ensure a proper fitting light. Most european tanks are frameless. The frame seems to be an American way of building tanks and not really of structural importance. At least that's what I gathered from my research.

yeah you may want more.. you got pressure hitting hte bkac now

Ya I know what you mean, I'd hate to see the back of the tank explode. But I think my bracing will be fine. I also have a 1/8" peice of black acrylic siliconed against the back wall on the inside. It's really just there as a background but if the back wall does decide to crack, it should buy me some time until a change over into a new tank. ;)

Did you re-do your sump? It looks different than before. I am not seeing the media tray.

The media tray is removeable and is not being used right now. The lines drain directly into the sump, one line is gate valved down while the other line trickles. This prevents gurgling, excessive drain noise, bubbles, foaming and less salt creep.

After seeing this thread, I had to try the glass cutting out. I just drilled a 1" bulkhead hole in a 10 gallon for a sump. Took about 15 min. Everything was a breeze.

Carefull with 10gallon glass. It's thinner than 20g. I tried a 10g sump and the glass cracked at the bulkhead. I might have overtightened the bulkhead but after two days the glass was cracked from edge to bulkhead. Just take it easy on the bulkhead and you'll be fine.

I built my overflow boxes out of glass that was like 3/32" thick (half the thickness of my 20L), and I managed to crack the glass around one of the bulkheads while I was cranking down on it too hard. I siliconed the crap out of it though and it appears to be fine. No leaks yet, but I'm watching.

GE 100% silicone from HD
i have been using this for a couple of years
on anything that needs it in my tanks
works great....
