Project External Glass Overflow

I also used DAP. Cleaned all the edges that were to be siliconed with MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone). HD & Lowes both carry it in the solvents section.

I was going to use acetone but I read that MEK was the ideal choice. The cans in the store made it sound like the only big difference between the two was MEK evaporates more slowly.

From what I understand, MEK is very good at removing any kind of oil or epoxy from the surface so that when you silicone the pieces together you get a good bond and less chance of a joint failing at a later time. Acetone does something similar, just not as thoroughly, possibly due to its greater rate of evaporation.

Tunjee,
Awsome job! i have a 20h and I will be following your example on this one.
How did you remove the plastic frame around the top? Is it very hard to do without damaging the tank?
Thanks,
-Chad

ninja,

I removed sections of the plastic frame on my 20L using a dremmel cutting disk and it worked very well. Just don't touch the glass with the disk (easy to avoid), and it'll be fine. I believe Tunjee cut his frame off that way also.

Thanks! I hit the corners with a dremel cut off disc then peeled off the trim. After thats done get your razor blade scraper out and clean the top edges, they will be loaded with silicone that needs to be removed.

hehe! Thanks. Just keep a few cold ones handy! You can work right through it.

Nice work Tunjee, Any updated pics of the tank? :D
I'm not very Handy as I've never really had to make anything, but anyway... Nice work, You've inspired me to think about dreaming of making something simliar :-P
See ya

Here's a pic of what I have so far. Not that anybody asked. :D

Thanks. The tank is 30" long, so I'm hoping to get a better distribution of flow and eliminate dead spots by having them in the corners. I'm going without a sandbed, so I'm going to have to keep that detritus in suspension so the skimmer can grab it as soon as it hits the water column!

That's cool man.
I know this is totally off subject, But would you know where I can find used tanks. In the 55-75G range for a really good price? I checked on Ebay, and well.. I coulnd't find anything. Anyway, thanks if you know :D
I'm in Miami, Florida if that helps.

I'm afraid I don't know off the top of my head. Have you hit the trading/selling forums on RC, and the other reef forums?

Yeah, I need someone close to be, as I don't think I'd be able to pay for shipping. I may just turn my 10Gallon tank into a little Nano reef.
I just don't know if I can keep up with the water bieng such a nooby :-D
