Project External Glass Overflow

Thanks Tunjee!!

You just saved me 800 bucks, the glass shop wanted to drill 30 tanks. I did the first one.

Mucha agua, mucha!!

Ok, so i tried the 1/8" glass and it broke....2 times! IN 5 MINUTES! Hahaha. It's worthless guys. Don't even bother. I'm gonna get some 1/4" glass done at a glass shop. Its like $50 tho. What prices are you guys paying?

1/4 glass is VERY cheap.. my overflows cost me 6 bucks for all 4 peices
I built a 18 gallon sump out of glass for 36 bucks.. Call around to other glass shops.. Sounds like that one is Way high

1/4" is fairly cheap. However, I'm guessing that $50 includes the cutting fees. Last summer I ordered 2 36"x24" sheets for about $70.

8BALL_99, did that price include the cutting? If so, I would say that is pretty cheap. I hope I can find a shop that will do it for that price.

suggest putting a 1/4 x 2 x lenght of box, strip of glass siliconed to main tank 1/2" under those slot to strenghten main tank. Get in there two do some plumbing or change filter and brake the main tank.

I don't really want to try scribing as I know I would never have piece of mind with it when I chip it (which i surely would). I tried 2 shops and got the same quote :( Losers. Any online places that aren't to ridiculously slow?...can you even ship glass panes? Seems kinda risky for a shipper lol

You're having trouble finding 1/4" glass from any local shops? Monterey Bay? I don't even know where I'd look there; call a local contractor and find out where they get their glass from. You can certainly ship pieces of glass, especially small pieces.

No they have it. It's just really expensive. I'm going to keep trying places and hopefully some1 will be reasonable about it.

gatohoser, I wouldn't worry about the shipping. In fact, when I ordered the glass panes for my canopy my local glass shop had to have their supplier cut the glass to size and then ship it to them.

My whole overflow box only cost me 15 bucks, thats with a 1/4" piece for the bottom after i cracked the 1/8" piece. I drilled my own holes.

Ok so i found a good shop and they got it to me for $4! Now to cut out the old piece and install the new one :worried:

Wow! I have now used both the dremel tapered bits; I used the one that is either 7103 or 7134 (forget which is the ball point and which is taper) and that one works ok but very slowly, but now I tried the one that comes in the combo pack with the ball point and that thing HAULS. It cuts clean and hauls butt even in 1/4" glass. I cut a hole about 4x faster with it than with the other bit. I can't even imagine what it would have done in my 1/8" glass. Its a lot easier to use too and makes a better smoother whe you are smoothing the edges of the cut.

Wow, this is a really great idea! Does anyone have an opinion on how safe this method would be on a 24" x 18" x 21" Oceanic tank? I seriously can't afford to have it crack on me ;) I'm not sure on the thickness of the glass yet - I'll check when the tank arrives. Would I be better off with one overflow in the center or two smaller ones in the corners?

And how much does it typically cost to get the glass sandblasted?

Thanks, everyone!
