Project Reeftank in the Dominican Rep.

Hi

Can someone in this Board can give me a Idea what is the differnce between white Floatglas and normal Floatglas ?

If you mean optiwhite (tm) it is low-iron glass so it's much more see-through than normal glass. And greater the difference with thicker glass such as yours.

Above - optiwhite (low iron)
Below - normal

Hi !

Thanks for the answer! how is it with the stability? Is there any difference ? We will use a 19 mm Floatglas ! What is your opinion, does a extra pricing from 30 - 40 pays off ?

Hi Elvischam

The Pumps and the skimmers i will buy in the USA, because of the fact that Europe is selling 220 V 50HZ. We need here 110 V 60HZ.
The Skimmers will be Deltec SC 4080 (Looking for a used one for this size). Someone has some experience with this Skimmers ?

I have experience with a Deltec SC2060 - very powerful and efficient. They are VERY sensitive to sudden changes in water height in the sump. Your sump design must ensure that the water level in the skimmer portion does not change. If your sump does not include a separate skimmer compartment you must build a separate box for the skimmer to sit in within the sump.

Hi Dave, thanks for the Feedback. There is planend a separate compartment for the Skimmer. can you recomend another Brand which is sufficient for this Size of Tanks?

Sasha, I think you will be fine with the Deltec line. You should note the significance of the designations in the Deltec line, though: "SC" is for in-sump skimmers, "CS" is for skimmer cleaners, "TC" is for stand-alone skimmers, i.e. not in-sump.

It is difficult for anyone here to make specific recommendations. You have not shown us your planned layout for the tank and its support systems. Will the skimmer and sump be under the tank stand or in a separate room or even on a separate floor in your home? Personally, I hate any equipment under the tank but that is because I'm fat and have difficulty reaching under the tank. :fun5:

Your best bet is to read others' build threads here on RC to see the various solutions people have come up with to suit their individual circumstances.

Hi Dave
i am happy that you are with me. The setup is my headace :headwalls:
I saw your posts in some of the Projects in this Forum and surely you can "Hold my hands"
I am German living in the DR. Sorry if there are some spelling mistakes or some unclear informations.

You saw the Sketch of the Tank on the first Page ? The Tank will be build in Wall. Because we are in the Process of constructing of our New House i thoght will be easier to Build the Tank Out of concrete. The Tank has a separate Technik room. I thought to Set the sump unter the Tank. I do have not done the Layout yet because,i am coming from the freshwater AQ and searching urgently for the Input. I guess within 4-5 weeks the Tank will be ready build out of concrete and the frontglas will be in place!

I will place a seperate 700 - 1000 gallon subterranean Tank (Sisterne) outside in the garden which has to be connected to the cycle of the main tank . The Idea to place behind is the water temperature Problem. I placed a small tank without light and pumps outside on our Terace and measured now several weeks the temperature of the Water. it went up to 29 grad. I habe the hope, that this subterranean Tank will cool down the water and I do not need a chiller.

What you Think about.
What you recomend SC, CS, TS for the skimmer. One Dealer in Germany recomended the selfcleaning Item from Deltec

Thanks
Sascha

I would suggest you NOT attempt to complete the tank with the house. Finish the tank later when you have had more time to make all the many decisions involved. Nothing good happens quickly on an aquarium. Your idea of a cistern outside will work but it must be buried at least one metre below grade to take advantage of soil cooling. You must be prepared for the high cost of the pump and its electrical power consumption to run this type of system.

If you are not familiar with the equipment and the many options I would suggest the three books called The Reef Aquarium by Delbeek and Sprung, especially volume 3. Your depending on everyone on RC to make your decisions is a bad move, in my humble opinion. We are not engineers and take no responsibility for bad or misinformed advice.

Having a separate technical room for the aquarium will be a big plus for regular maintenance. Once you decide on the equipment you want you can size the room accordingly. Get to know the equipment and read the many threads on RC to help make informed decisions.

Hi Dave

The tank will be just contructed and the glas will be set! Nothing more. The setup with devices, Water, Corals ect. is planned when the house is finished! I have to be Patient ! I will not start on the wrong way ;-)
Regarding the Energy, we will put solar pannels for this Tank! So we will not suffer, because of the Energy cost !

Can someone recomend me a Testing Kid for Saltwater ? I would like to test the Oceanwater here in the Dominican Rep. in order to see if this would have good quality to use in my tank.

You could start with API master salt water test kit they are non expensive and my 2nd option would be Red Sea test kit. Look in to getting a refracto meter to check salinity. There's a huge thread about this topic on using water straight from the ocean.
