Proof that Oceanic Salt is BAD!!!!

jdieck, good post and along the same lines as I was saying. If anyone wants to use the stuff go ahead it's your choice. But why so many people are complaining about what others are writing about their personal experience with a product is beyond me. In the years I have been reading this board, that to me was the purpose of everyones posts, to advise others about their personal experience with everything related to the hobby. Then add a little research of your own and make up your own mind. Just thought and by the way, I have a very nice Rio pump sitting in the garage anyone can have.

What else could it be? Perhaps for some of you it's more plausible that a brown slime encrusted meteor crashed in the Arizona desert thus infecting all of our tanks. :-)

was anyone injured? :)

Seriously though I am glad to read the good test results of the Kent.
It is the only salt I have ever used and was wondering if maybe I should try something elseââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦. lol no reason at all for thinking that, only that when I read these forums the people that I think are in the know like Melev here are using something else and who doesnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t want a tank that looks like his : )

jdieck, now that is what I call proof. Thank you for taking the time to explain your results.

Thanks Marc, you know how psychotically perfectionist I could be some times:lol:

Some of you guys are sick to research back that far. What's the point? To see if I am scaming salt companies? :-)

FYI - Completely different tank not to mention the many more documented problems with Marine Mix.

mojodeli ,
Is nothing sick about to research back to see the credibility of the poster RC is a very strong tool to advertise and misled people in to wrong or good direction.
I research back all of the time we have many times misled by people, i have to much money and time invested to take the word of some one that it had "nuking" his tank two or three times in a year and a half and have had problems with salts before.
Before i switch to Oceanic salt i did a good research to find out if the salt was good and i waited for almost a year before i got my first bucket of salt .
I had seen many very good "reliable reefers" using the salt with no problems .
This is no way is intend attacking you in any way you have a good luck with your tank.

salt creep and andy ....nutrients...trace elements found in newly mixed saltwater =nutrients for algae....plus newly mixed saltwater has an abundance of silicates due to the silica used as a drying agent ...add the two together and subject it to the kind of light mentioned on page 1 and you get the soup you see in the first picture....

How do you explain the clear broth in my second picture?

At that time I also did some testing of the IO but I did not mentioned them because I am not sure if IO had changed the formulation since then with the change of their bucket style also.
Basically IO tested very similar to Kent's with a difference that it had a bit higher alkalinity and a bit lower Calcium which IMO made it very equivalent to Kent in all aspects tested. Something to note here is that of course there might be differences in trace elements I did not tested like Strontium, Molybdenum and such or on the make itself of the Alkalinity in regard to carbonates/ Borates Ratio and or the specific buffers used to achieve it.

Well, I used Kent for years and year. I'm not following every salt thread on RC, but I am thinking about mixing 50% Kent with 50% Oceanic in future water changes. I have 6 buckets of Oceanic on hand currently, so I'm not going to simply switch back and take that kind of loss.

I've not seen the problems others have. I guess I'm from the group of people that have had good results.

Oceanic contacted me and told me to have it replaced at my local fish store. I'm going to send in a sample to them. I would recommend any who are getting it to do the same.

They were very polite and quick to respond. If anyone here wants a small sample as well who has a phosphate kit, I'll send some of it to you as well for testing.

Thanks.

Jason

I decided to take the loss and dump the oceanic I had on hand, I have too much money invested in the tank to take that kind of risk.

I sent multiple emails to oceanic on this, they never even emailed me back to say they received my email.

I have not tested my freshly mixed ASW for Strontium, but I am currently using Oceanic and my system is consistntly low on Str, about 4 ppm (Salifert)
When I get some extra time this week I will perform all the tests that I am capable of doing on my Oceanic batch. Ca Mg St Alk Ph NO2 NO3 NH4 & silicates. All with Salifert kits. I can post results if you all would like.

Yes but it could be a bad batch that some of us are dealing with. I'll try the new bucket and If I don't see any changes after about 5 water changes or so, then I'll see if another reefer who has no problems with it wants to buy it cheap. I'll go to Tropic Marin as I've heard good things about that salt.

jdieck: Thanks for taking the time to perform this very informative test, this kind of post was longly overdue and proves to many other reefers that there is evidence with Oceanic containing algae causing nutrients.

I was always on the fence about whether Oceanic caused algae blooms or not. I have used it for the past couple months and have experienced the exact same colored brownish algae as your previous pic. I never thought anything of it, but always followed the other Oceanic "bashing" posts to see if there was any evidence of the salt actually causing problems.

Your post truly confirms this. Thanks again.

Oh, and I would also like to thank mojodeli for getting the ball rolling. Your pics contained enough evidence for me to stop using Oceanic...

I am sooo Happy I bought a bucket of IO today instead of another stock of Oceanic.

This debate has gone on for quite some time, and I hope this really spreads enough light (no pun intended) on this whole concern.

I also setup a tank using Oceanic ,its been about 3 months, and I can notice the slightest amount of that brown algae on the pumps and the sand.
Its certainly not Diatoms ,as they have gone away some time ago.
I will be doing a 20% water change today, In hopes of "nipping this in the bud" before it starts.
