What's a good brand to buy? I want to put it in a sump by the way so I don't want the hang on type.

i have always been a Reef Octopus fan and within their models i like their re-circulating one better.

I bought a Tunze 9002 for my 24ga nano tank.

The construction of the device is "shoddy" at best, as the top and bottom fell off many times when I was trying to set it up.

However, I set it up on Monday of this week, it's Thursday today and it's already pulling out skimmate....

So, so far.....I'm pleased with the Tunze 9002. Glad it's getting all that crap out of my tank. It's like liquid gold to my eyes whenever I see skimmate.

I second the reef octopus. I had a marineland 100 and it was decent, then I downgraded to a biocube and had an aquatic life that was also decent. Now I have a reef octopus and I almost threw up the first time I smelled what came out of it. it smelled like sewage mixed with swamp gas and was jet black

Another Reef Octopus fan here. Running an SRO-3000 internal skimmer on my 150g (200g total system volume) FOWLR. Tank was just started in early October so I'm only up to two fish so far and the skimmer is already pulling out nice dark gunk.

buy one that is rated for a larger tank, ie.. if you have a 50 gal tank, buy a skimmer rated for 75 or 100 gals..
also you can find some great buys on local reef forums

I would also take a look at the aquamaxx cone and coneS skimmers great products and a little better on the pocket book the to RO's. I'd look at the aquamaxx coneS co1 for the 55g that's what I use on my 55g pulls out some wicked nasty black stuff.

This may be a bit premature and may all be "in my head"....but my Tunze 9002 has been up and running for a little under a week now.....and the algae (brown hair) that I scraped off last weekend has NOT returned. Usually after a few days that stuff returns with a vengeance.

Call me crazy...but I think my skimmer is actually helping keep the algae problem in control?
