My son joined the Army this week. I am so proud of him! I think this is a positive step for him. For the last 7 months he has just hung out with his friends. He will ship out on Feb 12. I will miss him but am very proud of him.
I goofed around and got a Graphic Design degree which means nothing in Alabama and now I'm a contractor for the goverment. If I had prior military experience, I could make alot more.
Good Luck with everything!
I went into the Army when I was 17 (back before the Earth's crust had fully cooled). It was the first time I had been anywhere for any amount of time where I knew no one. I think everybody should have that experience. It imparts a growth and maturity and self-respect that would be hard to get in a "safe secure" environment. He'll come back to you a stronger person. I know how proud you must be!
Congrats, I have seen a lot of people go in one way, and come back a whole lot better off. The good thing about military is retirement after 20 years of service, and like Abraxos said, it looks great for future jobs.

Just an update. My son is now at boot camp. I have received two letters from him. He says it is hard but seems to be in good spirits. He is at Fort Knox as he says also know as Fort Sucks alot.
Good luck to him. I probably would have Joined some branch of the military myself if I wouldn't have had my first son so young. I've got a few friends that joined various branches. Some have complaints some don't, But most all of them are glad they joined.
The benefits alone for people that stay in are huge. I've got a friend that will retire 3 years before his mom. And he is the youngest of several siblings lol. The way things are now job security alone is a pretty big deal even if he doesn't decide to make it a career.

I was also in Fort Knox after basic. Fort Knox is actually 100% bettter than most of the other places he could have been sent to.
It has real buildings with heat and running water. Some of the boot camp forts are horrible. Well I am sure not as bad as they used to be but I am sure, no picnic.
He will be out soon and the rest of his time in the service will not be anywhere as rough.
I am proud for him, and I don't even know him
My dad was a career army man. Great life! Seems to embue a sense of service, self-discipline, self-respect, respect for authority and love for country. Pretty great qualities, IMO.

Congrats! I hope he does well... What is mos going to be? I work at Ft. Rucker and have to deal with a lot of pilots. Most of them are nice and down to earth. It seems the Apache pilots are the worst to deal with. When the center of the earth breaks open some of them are going to be very disappointed, because their going find out their not the center of the world. Aviation is a good field to be in a lot of my friends have their A&P or pilot license.
