Ripped or torn caulerpa tends to leak toxins into the water. I have noticed that some inverts, zoanthids in particular, tend to close up while I'm pulling out the caulerpa. Since it is basically impossible to pull it out without ripping it, I try to do my pruning right before my weekly water/carbon change. This helps to minimize the amount of toxins in the water.
By the way, don't let this stuff take hold in your display tank. I am plagued by caulerpa, which has taken hold on nearly all of my live rocks and is choking out everything else.
