Pseudochromis elongatus (pic)

this Dottyback is small! Two inches and friendly. You might stare at my aquarium for hours and never see it. Note sponge growth and worms.

I picked one up a couple of weeks ago from ARC for the picotope on my desk at home. I love their color (mine is a little more pink) and I catch mine always checking me out while I am working at the computer, but as soon as I lean over to get a better look he retreats to his cave to peer back at me from a protected location!

does anybody know if this species can be kept in groups (similar to the Orchid Dottyback)?

These are beautiful fish. With an aquarium your size, I'd be willing you could keep two of almost all the dottyback species. You've got plenty of rock for hiding spots also.

You'll have to be careful not to get two males if you do get another. At two inches, it may still be female or sexually immature. I know most species of dottyback change sex from female to male (the opposite of clownfish). Some of the species are capable of reverting sex and going back to female though. It's pretty cool. This takes about twice as long as the change from female to male though.

thanks!

thanks!

I'm also wondering if coloration might be an indicator of sex. Mine seems very red.

Maybe it's because of all the baby bristleworms and Cyclopeeze it eats. Maybe it's just because the ORA strain is more red. I dunno.

There aren't many dottyback's that exhibit sexual dichromatism, and I don't think this is one, but I could be wrong.

Wittenrich doesn't have anything specfic in his book about elongatus... when in doubt he says to assume orchid like behavior. it seems with a few exceptions, dotty's live in groups and establish hierachies. two juvies should for a pair and small groups in aquariums would most likey work . bill addison/c-quest was the guy who really started the captive breeding of dotties for the aqaurium trade. maybe search MOFIB or Addison for more species specific info?
