psudeochromis

Hey folks this is my first time to converse. I have purchased a 24 gal. Aquapod for a reef tank. One of my favoritr LFS had in every one of his reef display tanks a beautiful fishcalled a pseudochromis. He said it would be an excellent fish for my first fish as it was a good hardy fish and showed me that he had on in every tank on display. So I purchased one for $65. Every other fish I try to add to my tank he bothers it so bad the poor little fish stays at the top of my tank gasping for air. I was wanting a peaceful tank and wanted no aggressive fish at all. The owner is sorry for my problem and will take it back if I can catch it. Any suggestions of a fish that will get along with my psudeochromis. He is beautiful but just has a bad attitude.

I was tempted to get a neon pseudo on sale for $30, but I had to remind myself some families of fish can't be trusted to be peaceful.

I would never suggest any of the pseudochromis, basslet or damsel families, at least not for a nano. You end up putting a fish that has a history of being semi-aggressive into a confined area of a nano with another fish and you're bound to see upsetting results.

Those neons are super cute though. The part of me that thinks that is constantly battling the part of me that knows better. ;)

Take him, trade him in and buy something more friendly. It'll save you a lot of headaches in the long run.

Personally, for some fish with a great personality I'd recommend a midas blenny, tailspot blenny, pearly jawfish, or if you're going to spend $60 check out an exquisite wrasse or something similiar.

You're much more brave than I am to spend $65 on your first fish. :) Good luck!

It was asked which one. Mine is dark blue outlined with orange. I paid $65 because I probably did not know better. My LFS said the fish is hard to come by.

hey..
i have a 25gallon nano, 2 ocelaris, i just added a pseudochromis fridmani ( purple one ), am i gona have probs with agressivity of the pseudochromis??thanks

LaFishLover, I believe it was a neon. They generally cost about what you paid, that's why I was tempted to buy one when I saw it at half that price. :)

AJF, it's hard to tell, but I honestly haven't heard of too many issues with clowns being picked on by pseudos. That's not to say they haven't, but I haven't heard of it. Perhaps because they don't really go into the pseudos territory because clowns host small areas of the tank. That could be a reason. Just keep an eye out on your pseudos behavior and good luck!

whoaa bad luck LAfishlover,
it's been a week the fridmani is at the aquarium and i think i am not going to have probs, the pair of ocelaris are already bigger than the pseudo, and they have a diferent territory.
til now i haven't seen probs.
let's see...

64 for a pseudochromis? they're like 20 bux man, and they're all mean fish... they look like bicolor blennys but the LFS doesnt tell u that. bi colors are MUCH more passive, and dont eat ur shrimp. my stupid pseudo chromis at my cleaner and sexy shrimps... so i got rid of it.

He's talking about a neon pseudo. They range from $50-70 usually, but the price has been coming down, especially where I live in South Florida to $25-30. I'm not sure why there is such a large price range for them, most of the ones I've seen are TR so it can't be because of WC vs TR.

My purple pseudo never bothered either of my clowns, but he killedevery other fish I tried to put in the tank including 3 peppermint shrimp,2 red scooter blennies, and a pretty big domino damsel that I was nursing back to health for a friend.

My fish likes to eat Chromis... but 60dollars is a bit costly.

My curiosity would be how you are introducing the fish to the tank LAfishlover.

With aggresive fish IMO or even semi aggresive, they all seem to have territories that they defend in the reef/nano. I have had great success with my fish in my 20GH. I have an Ocilarus (spelling) Clown with a Flame Hawkfish ( Aggressive ) and a spotted or jeweled grouper. Stop the presses on anyone going to tell me that I need a bigger tank ect ect... I have three tanks and this grouper is about 1 1/4 inches long and will be moved out in another month.

I find with small tanks IE nanos if you shut the lights off, then move all the live rock in the tank, and I mean all of it. Introduce the new fish ( of course QT tank is were it should come from ) with the lights off and then the next day return the lights to schedule. This gives the aggresive fish the idea that instead of a new intruder in the tank, they think that they have been moved to a different part of the reef. So they are not defending territory they have to establish the territory again.
