PTSD treatment tank

Sorry to hear that man. My DC skimmer pump died after about 4 months, from my experience and reading I don't think I'll be up for another DC pump any time soon. Back to an Aquabee 5000 for my skimmer, that tremendous humm lets me know it's still going!

Sorry to hear about your pump problems. I've been monitoring the various DC pumps because I like the idea of using them, but I'm curious how reliable they are long term. At MACNA this year, I spoke with the Royal Exclusiv folks about their DC pump now available in the US. It's not cheep, but they seem to make a good product.

This is just my approach, but I like to put twin return pumps on my system that are rated lower so that even if one goes down, you have at least half of the flow still maintained. This means extra plumbing, space, and money, but redundancy gives you some peace of mind especially if you have a third matching pump on hand to swap out. Again, that's more money, but we do invest a lot of money in coral and fish.

I know and the sad part is about 4 months ago I sold off my backup because it was running so well and it was just sitting around and I keep on tripping on it. I should have known better.

Well CoralVue is sending me a replacement pump. I just got the email today. But I am starting to wonder what they are going to send if they dropped the Diablo line unless they have some extras sitting around just for replacements. I guess I will just have to wait and see.

I just replaced a broken diablo 10500 pump under warranty and got the same model as a replacement... So I bet they have some sitting around for warranty use.

Sorry to hear your trouble! If mine goes out again, I'm replacing with a Royal Exclusive Speedy 80w.

Well I got the tracking number for it and it should be here by the 17th. I tried to call FedEx and ask them if I could pay for next day or 2nd day air but the lady said no I couldn't do that. I think that is a bunch of BS.

I was just talking to a local guy that had his replaced and he got the new DC pump from them that hasn't come out yet. I guess they are using him as a test run.

Good luck! I've heard of other people getting newer equipment too. Assuming their serial numbers go in order the pump I got is actually a few thousand units older than the one that broke..

I have a new style one on the way as well which I'm going to use for reactors. Figured j could buy nearly four of those pumps for what one Speedy costs.. Worth a try!

Hello SGT,

I have read through your thread and I am impressed with your build and I feel for you with your equipment failures, cyano, high trates etc. I too am a veteran that uses their tank for relaxation. I was in the Navy Submarine Service. I joined a week after the planes hit in NYC. While I did not have my boots on the ground, I was in that theater. My job was Communications and Intelligence. We provided many strike assists from my boat. While I was not exposed to the trials of desert life and the torture of being combat wounded, we did have our own set of issues that arose from being on deployment. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Newbie with your extended recovery from OEF/OIF. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

I am in the planning stages of my next build as well. Future 180 with a satellite 125 sump, 40 Br Refugium.

You can't bomb without Comms! Putting Warheads on Foreheads from 2001-2009.

Well I got my replacement pump from CoralVue today. Got it all hooked up and running and just seen that it has a small leak on the molded cover. I just hope it can hold out until I get my Iwaki that I ordered yesterday. I think they might have lost some business from me with two bad pumps.

I guess I should have added that my tank is looking like crap big time. Some of my SPS are starting to STN and I have hair algae starting to break out from not really being able to run my tank the way it has been.

Well I can see that it has been a month since I have posted anything so I guess it's time to write something. Well after the return pump problems I ordered a Iwaki return pump. This last weekend I got it all plumbed into the system and took the DC pump off. I love the amount of flow this thing pumps out. The pump is quiet for the most part but I have one problem. I don't know what is going on but it makes my sump really hum. I can hold the sump and it stops but as soon as I let go its this hum to it. I don't know if its because its hard plumbed or what.

But this weekend I plan on setting up my dosing pumps to dose two part. I have a bubble magus 3 port dosing pump. Right now I have one port running vodka but the other two will have CA and ALK.

I have a couple of rocks that no matter what I do still grow hair algae on them. You know they have to be the bottom base rocks to so taking them out with out having to take all of the rock out wont do. Maybe bumping up my cleaning crew might take care of it.

Could it be those rocks in question are leaching phosphates thus enabling the growth of hair algae on them? I would bump up the CUC for sure. I always have great luck with John from Reef Cleaners.

I would think the hum from your sump is definitely from the pump being hard plumbed into the system. I always like to have a few inches of flex tubing connected to the pump just to dampen any types of vibration. BRS also sells a sound dampening pad that you can put under the pump to dampen any transient vibrations as well.

How are your corals doing now? You had mentioned they were STNing before... I hope everything is starting to level off for you.

I have a foam under the pump but I will see if I have something around that I can put under it to give it a try.
As for the STNing that has stopped but so thats good. But I am not getting any growth so its just sitting around kind.

Well its been some time since I have wrote anything about my tank so I guess its time for a update. I cant remember what I have written about since last time so I will start out fresh.

I have had a tank crash that wiped out almost everything my auto top off got stuck on and dumped all of my kalk into my tank. Just the day before I filled up my reactor with about 2 cups of kalk.

Next my DC return pump kicked the bucket so I got a another one under warranty but only running it for about a month I went and got a Iwaki pump so it shouldn't give me problems for years to come. Well I hope I got my fingers crossed on this one.

LED's have now been removed and I went with the Hamiliton Cube MH T5 combo. I can tell my lighting is so much better. But its to soon to say if everything is happy or not. It has only been on the tank for three days now.

I have been having problems keeping up with Alk and CA dosing 2 part. So last week I picked up a used CA reactor. Right now I am still in the adjustment part but things are getting more stable.

I hope with the changes I have done I can now keep SPS my tank has been the SPS tank of death. So with the changes I hope and pray that it will make a turn for the better.

Sorry to hear about the crash, glad you stayed the course.

What type CaRx did you get?

Things will get better.
