I have been there before and snorkeled but i was wondering if anybody has any reccommendations. I am looking for a great snorkel cruise with a great reef to view. This is going to be my honeymoon and my future wife will need a great experience so she will want to do this again and again. Please help.

Next time I go back to Puerto Rico, I want to make it to the "Spanish Virgin Islands" I believe they were called. They are off of the NW coastline. There was a ferry I think that goes over, or you can do a liveaboard too.

I stayed in Rincon on the West coast and wanted to go to Desecheo Island, but the charter boat was broken down while there.

I rented a couple tanks and went Beach diving at the Big wave break "Tres Palmas" while it was flat. By far the most beautiful reef I have seen, better than the Bahamas,Costa Rica and the FL Keys.

I need to find some of the links I had that have good information. Have Fun, I love it there!

I loved culebra a very small island just east. I stayed here when doing sea turtle research:

Ask a dive shop in Ponce PR, for Caja de muerto island, and for The pinnacles in Parguera. Nobody goes there, kind of secret, amazing.

From Rincon, from January to March you can go to Mona island, very similar to galapagos, and watch humpback whales and dolphins all the way.

I second Culebra. Very beautiful there. Also, If you are up for a little road trip go down 52 to Ponce, while you are on 52 you will see an island of to the left that looks like a "dead man", I think my wife said it was called "Casket Island" (English Translation). If you make it there, go diving there, it is the best I have found. A little secret place that no many people know about!!!!

There are many places right in San Juan also that you can go snorkeling right of the beach, on place that comes to mind is Playa de Escarbon sp??, I took my family along with the in-laws there and my daughter and I loved the snorkeling right there from the beach. You can go 20-30 feet out and still see plenty of fish, not much coral there though. But for $15( cost of a snorkel and fins at wal-mart) you can't beat it!

Just my two cents :)

Sorry ediaz, maybe I should have read your post first before I wrote mine. Caja de Muerto is the same island I was refering to :)

Best place I have ever dove by far!!!

I lived in Puerto Rico for a few years and I have dived all over the area many times. I was lucky in that my dad had a good friend who owned a 32ft hunter sailboat. We used to take it out from Fajardo on the east side of the island and go out on it for up to 4-5 days at a time. The closest islands in the area are vieques and culebra. Culebra is a little farther. Both have really nice reefs. My favorite place is an island called Icacos. Its in the same genaral area. The reef there was unbeliveable! Back then I didnt know much about saltwater fish and corals but I remember seeing all kinds of large reef fish and just about any coral you can think of. That part of the caribbean is one of my favorite places in the world. If you get a chance hop on a small propeler plane over to the virgin islands. They are great too. I really miss living there. What a great place!

Heres a pic of icacos. I just type icacos in google and there wasa bunch of info on it. I HIGHLY recomend the island for diving and snorkeling!!! Also click on this link ..http://www.snorkelpr.com/

Also go to the caves of camuey. They are at the north west part of the island. You can also visit the arecibo radar dish near there too. The caves are awesome!

I just got back from a trip to Puerto Rico. We went on a Barefoot sailing/snorkeling cruise out of Fajardo. Fajardo is in the North East part of the island and the trip was great. We left at 10 am and went to a small island. We anchored and they offered a snorkeling class for the beginners or you could skip and snorkel on your own, the first reef was pretty nice, water was very shallow, maybe 4 or 5 feet. They made us a great lunch then we pulled up anchored and went to the other side of the island where the water was about 15 to 20 feet deep. The reef here was spectacular, covered in coral and loaded with fish. A school of about 50 tangs took residence up under the boat and ate algea from the boats bottom. We saw angels, tangs, seargent majors, blennies, butterflies, parrot fish, wrasses and a ton of fish that I didn't know. We saw an octopus, saw nudibrachs, worms, hermits, snails and urchins. We snorkeled here for about an hour than pulled up anchor and sailed back to the harbor (about 1.5 hours). They cut up fresh fruit and made rum drinks for the trip back. We got back about 4 pm. The sail boat was the Barefoot 4, the boat was nice and the crew was great. A wonderful day trip. I have some pictures, but the file sizes are too large to upload. Have agreat time on your trip.
