Pulsing Zenia

Hello All:

Any advice on caring for Pulsing Zenia? Any information regarding placement, water movement and supplements would be appreciated....

I am new at this but from what I understand pulsing zenia should be located in a low to medium flow location, under strong lighting and supplemented with Iodine. Are my assumptions correct?

Thanks in advance....

^^^ he is right. you know your stuff, nice job!

my xenia grows like no tomorrow, it can become the plague if you don't frag it. but my lfs pays me 5 bucks per frag of xenia so i can really get a xenia farm going here that pays!

I never dose iodine and my pulsing xenia grows quickly.
I do water changes every 2 weeks so I believe the iodine trace levels are supplemented that way.

You can supplement the Iodine and Iodide but just be careful with how much. It took me a while to realize how concentrated the stuff really is.
They can be like the pague. That being said, I like them in my tank. They add a lot of movement and look really cool. I paid 60 dollars for my original little cluster of them and now the colony has at least tripled in size since mid November when I put the stuff in.
As far as flow goes... Anything short of heavy flow blasting on them so they physically can't open is fine. I think you'll be suprised how little you need to worry about it. I've moved small rocks of it around the tank ( I know I know, just asking for trouble) and it's all doing fine. The difference is basically how you want to view it. You can put them in an almost calm spot and watch them open and close by themselves, or put them where they get whipped around once in a while. It doesn't matter with mine.

I just bought some about two weeks ago, about four pieces on one rock. One of the pieces came off of the rock and looked like it was ripped. I removed the xenia from the tank and found an evil white crab holding on. I believe he was the one that "ripped" it from the rock. I am glad I got him out of my tank.

On the other side of the coin, I added some to my system a week ago and it wilted and 'melted' within a few days. Wasn't happy AT ALL.

I have some xenia right next to a tunze they look like they are in a hurricane. They still multiply like crazey purchased one 6 months ago now there is a square foot of them. I think they are low maintance and will do well anywhere.

Anyone know how to move them, can you use a razorblade or do they have to grow on to something that is removed.

Another interesting thing I've noticed about them is for whatever reason, they seem to be immune to aiptasia stings. I've got a cluster that is constantly in contact with an aiptasia and they haven't been affected at all. Another cluster is in constant contact with one of my finger leathers and it isn't bothered by them at all. I'm somewhat suprised.

You can cut them with a razor blade. I've had ones that would attach to a rock, but then I'd decide to move it and so a tiny piece of flesh remains on the rock. A few days later, I start to see polyps growing. My tank is somewhat heavy in Iodine and Iodide though since my regimen per week is 1 drop of Lugol, 1 cap of Kent Tech-I, and 2 capfuls of Iodide (1 cap every 3 days).

Low to medium water flow - mine MOVED into the high current and has stayed put ever since its little trek accross my tank

Thanks All....I I tried several different places in the tank. The first few had too much flow...It got knocked over. Finally found a spot in the mid to upper level of the tank where it looks good and is not getting too beat up....No camera yet but will post photos soon...

Thanks again.

Be careful to not locate the xenia next to a rock that you don't want the xenia on. It will spread to anything it can touch. It is a good idea to put some spacer rocks around your xenia colony. So that when it spreads to them you can either remove them and trade them for something at the LFS. Or you can move them to another location in the tank.

JmLee: You'll have to let us know where you are first. If you anywhere near the DC area, you're welcome to some of mine.

I usually sell it at $5 a stalk, and find takers in my area. My LFS is usually full up on xenia, but occasionally takes it.

Though it grows like a weed in my tank, I absolutely love the stuff still. It gets more comments than anything else in the tank. If you are worried about it growing out of control, you can grow it on an "island" of LR; as long as it can't reach out towards anything on the side, it will be stranded, because xenia has a hard time crawling across sand.

Mine in my tanks are like weeds. I cant stop them from growing. Some people have good luck, others cant get them to grow, its just one of those things! HTH
