Pump and PVC Fittings

I have a blueline 50 HD external pump and I need to install union ball valves on both the in and out. I got the schedule 80 true union ball valves from Bulk Reef Supply.

Should I put some pipe dope on the threads first? That is what I have read when screwing in pvc barbed fittings to pvc fittings. I read using teflon tape is not advisable in that could crack the fitting if tightened to much with it.

Also, is it hand tight and then half a turn with a wrench?

Hand tight—NO wrench. The wrench is the other reason fittings crack....also it is not 'pipe dope,' rather a non-hardening thread sealant, generally containing teflon...
