pump for 58gal oceanic

What are you trying to keep? If you are looking for the return to generate a good amount of flow for SPS you might want to look at a Mag 9.5. I run one on my 72 bow and wish I had Mag 12 on the tank.

Yeah, Mag3 or 5 would work well. You can convert one to the other with a front cover swap if you want to try both. There really isn't much difference in flow (270 vs 310 GPH @ 4').

You dont want a huge return pump. That is not what they are for.

I have the same tank, and am currently using a MAG 9.5. At first I had a ball valve dumping some of the return back into the sump, but currently I am using the full throttle of the pump. If/when I do it again I will probably buy a Ehiem 1262 or 1260, mainly for noise reasons. The MAG is a little louder.

I am using a Velocity T2 for my 58 with a 20H sump. It is external, but so quiet that honestly, if it wasn't for water movement I wouldn't know it was on.

I have an eheim 1260 on my 58 gallon w/ 20 gallon sump. I could have gotten by with the eheim 1250 but the 1260 gives me the option of increasing the flow if I want to. I have a T with a ball valve off the return to adjust the flow through the sump.

i had a eheim 1250, but the flow seemed too little. then i went with a quite 3000? seems to be about the right amount. i think the flow on the 3000 is close to the 1260 or mag 7, maybe a slight bit more.

I use a mag 9.5 on my oceanic 58. Noise is not an issue, the pump is fairly quiet anyway, plus I have it sitting on rubber feet so it is very quiet, the rippling of the water in the sump is louder than the pump. You want as much flow as the system will handle without blowing sand around constantly, you want to direct it to eliminate dead spots throughout the tank and have god flow in the water column at large.

that being said, My Mag 9.5 goes through a SCWD and each branch splits into 2 outlets. You can see pictures of this in my gallery. Anyway between the SCWD, the splits, and the 90 degree bends I wish i had more flow from the return. I also have a hagen 802 PH in the tank(400GPH) and a minijet with 120GPH in the tank for flow. Still wish I had more. I have another mag 9 that I am going to use for a closed loop I think, that should put it where I want to be.

My Flow philosophy... you really can't have enough...if your fish are pinned against the glass and your corals are being ripped off thier bases then maybe. The natural reefs have tremendous flow, sometimes when I dive I have trouble hovering in one place. The healthiest systems I have seen and been involved with all had more flow than what most people would have thought neccessary. Get the biggest pump you can afford, if you need to throttle it back you can, or if you need to divert some of the flow for other things(fuge, skimmer, Ca reactor, etc) you could do that too. I have often wished I had a bigger pump or more flow, I have never wished that I had a smaller pump or less flow.

Just my $.02

hope it helps

I had a 9.5 with a SCWD. On my setup, the flow was cut to ~ a Mag5 level. Mags are flow pumps and really lose a lot of flow when you add head to them.
