I use a mag 9.5 on my oceanic 58. Noise is not an issue, the pump is fairly quiet anyway, plus I have it sitting on rubber feet so it is very quiet, the rippling of the water in the sump is louder than the pump. You want as much flow as the system will handle without blowing sand around constantly, you want to direct it to eliminate dead spots throughout the tank and have god flow in the water column at large.
that being said, My Mag 9.5 goes through a SCWD and each branch splits into 2 outlets. You can see pictures of this in my gallery. Anyway between the SCWD, the splits, and the 90 degree bends I wish i had more flow from the return. I also have a hagen 802 PH in the tank(400GPH) and a minijet with 120GPH in the tank for flow. Still wish I had more. I have another mag 9 that I am going to use for a closed loop I think, that should put it where I want to be.
My Flow philosophy... you really can't have enough...if your fish are pinned against the glass and your corals are being ripped off thier bases then maybe. The natural reefs have tremendous flow, sometimes when I dive I have trouble hovering in one place. The healthiest systems I have seen and been involved with all had more flow than what most people would have thought neccessary. Get the biggest pump you can afford, if you need to throttle it back you can, or if you need to divert some of the flow for other things(fuge, skimmer, Ca reactor, etc) you could do that too. I have often wished I had a bigger pump or more flow, I have never wished that I had a smaller pump or less flow.
Just my $.02
hope it helps
