Pump recommendation

Just purchased a EuroReef skimmer from your company and am happy with the quick shipment. I have a 75 aga reef ready tank. The return pump line will travel 6-7 feet (including going up approx 3 feet). What return pump would you recommend. (The flow rate from the tank is 600 gph). Thanks.

Thank you for your order, we greatly appreciate it!

The recommended flow through on the ER's is 1 to 1.5x your tank volume per hour. You could always start at about 150gph and then work your way down from there to see what works best for you.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Jeremy - I'm a little confused. I want to order a return pump from my sump. Are you saying I just need a return pump that only goes 150 gph? I thought I would need something much larger than that. By the way - one of the major reasons I use your company is that you actually respond to inquiries from your customers.

I"m sorry, I didnt read carefully enough. I thought you were asking about the flow through for a recirculating EuroReef skimmer, I apologize.

For a return pump on that size tank you might go with a PanWorld 50PX or Iwaki 30 RLT for externals, or a Mag950 or Eheim 1260 for a submersible pump.

Are you going to put the pump through a static return, or will it be going through something such as a SeaSwirl, WavySea, etc?

At this point I'm just going through a static return and I will be ordering a submersible pump. I have been told to install a gate valve after the pump so I can control the flow. I guess my issue is that the tank will be draining at 600 gph (is this right?) and I would need a return pump that would at least return the same amount to the tank from the sump. So I'll conduct a little research and order either the Eheim 1260 or the Mag950 from you. Thanks again. Rob

Actually you do not need a pump that will be flowing right at 600gph. You could have a pump that is doing 450gph and the drain will still work just fine. The drain/overflow in your system actually takes out no more, and no less water than what your return pump is putting back in.

Also, you don't necessarily need a gate valve in this situation, a ball valve will be much cheaper and work just fine for you.

Yes, same as the Mag, they can be ran either way, however true external pumps are typically stronger, have less heat transfer, and last longer over time.

im glad you told me that....i was planning on running one externally. Is the velocity Blueline the same thing as the panworld?

The Velocity is a completely different pump the PanWorld pumps. The Velocity is the most quiet pump you will find on the market, however it dos put quite a bit of heat in the water.

previously you mentioned the PanWorld 50PX or Iwaki 30 RLT for externals for a 75g return pump. My biggest concerns are heat and noise. With those two factors in mind, which external pump would you recommend?

IF heat is the main concern I would recommend going with either the PanWorld or Iwaki, but for noise I would definitely go with the Velocity. Do you have a chiller on the tank?

one last thing, since im not using my sump return for my main circulation of the tank (Im using powerheads). I should be fine with the panworld 40px on my 75g instead of the 50px. Is this corrcect?
