Pump Size/sump In Basement

i have a 200 gallon tank. i got a 90 gallon i am going to make into a sump with a refugium and filtration. i want to setup my fulter in my basement under neith my tank. it would be quite, easy water changes and exc. what size pump will i be needing? the pump will be setup about 12 feet from the top of my tank. i am going to need an external pump and also run my uv light.

I assume by your description that the maintank is on 1 floor and the sump will be located in the basementon the floor directly below the tank. The thing you are going to have to look at when looking at pumps is a pump that will lift water 12'. After that I would look for a pump that will move between 1000-1500 GPH. I have a 220 with a 70G sump and my pump move about 850G and it is slightly undersized IMO.

you could probably get away with the barracuda http://www.customaquatic.com/customaquatic/itemdetail.asp?itemid=WP-MTBARRACUDA as long as you keep the return line 2" as far up as you can.

Which pump will depend on how much flow you want. I also run a basement sump- silence, easy everything, and no skimmer smell. I currently use a Sequence tarpon pushing up 12' and over 25', which gives me about 700 GPH. It is a cool running , reasonably quiet pump. Before that, I ran a velocity pump- ~600GPH, dead silent, but rather warm running.

i also run a hammerhead from the basement. a lot of flow indeed but now much push once at the tank IMO and utilize tunzes for additional flow in the tank. An Iwaki 75 or 100 would also work.

I run an Iwaki 100 up a 10-15' rise to the livingroom in a 54g, but I have to throttle it back considerably. Do put a union ball valve in that line: if you have to stop anything, that's a useful tool.

yes the sump will be in the basement and my tank on the first floor. i am building a custom sump from a 90 gallon tank. do these pumps last a long time?they kinda of expensive and now i am thinking what happense when the pump does take a crap!!!gonna need a back up... when you say 800gph thats after the head room loss? so i need like a 5000gph pump? if anyone has any photos of the basement setup i would like to see some ideas thanks. learn from others mistakes.
