Punta Cana Fish ID

I just returned from a dive trip in Punta Cana and did not get my pics developed yet, but I am dying to know what a school of fish is that were constantly in the water. They look similar to a needlefish, except only their chin has the spike, there mouth is over the spike, not part of it. They were anywhere from 6-12" in length, kind of blue with yellow tail markings. Anyone have any ideas?

Could be a trumpet fish from your description. They would also be common on the reefs in that area. However, a picture would be needed for an accurate ID.

When I was down there I heard lots of people calling them Gar. When I returned home I looked the up and sure enough, that's what they were.

Those are ballyhoo, ID'd by the upper part of tail being yellow to orange, the other local half beaks have violet blue, which makes them look sort of clear under water. Nice photo's of a very skittish fast fish.

I took it with the canon from the subject with a canon underwater case. Pictures were amazing. Lots of blue tangs and damsels.

It has underwater modes.

I took about 200 pics in Puta Cana and the reefs are barren.

I was disappointed when I did some snorkeling in Punta Cana last year. There lots of fishes to see, but in terms of corals almost nothing. Any idea why that is the case? Pollution?
