Hey,
I have a 4ft tank and it grows purple algae not sure on the correct name for it, but i have tried several things to dispurse of it and nothing seems to be working. there is only 2 clownfish in there (perclua) and it has a blue and white lighting. Ive tried increasing and decreasing the lighting, and more frequent water changes but i cant seem to get it to go away. Does any one have any suggestions?

I also have a 2ft tank with 2 maroon clowns in there and im haveing the same problem except the algae is the green hair algae. I have blue and white lighting also on this tank and i have also tried the ways listed above to try and cure the problem but nothing is working. Does any one have any suggestions or know how to fix the problem?

Thanx, wozz

yeh thanx for that ill have to look into getting some of those. Stilll dont know what to do about the purple algae though...

yeah what kind of texture does the purple algae have? Pictures are worth a thousand words. Also I got what you mean by blue and white lighting but can you be more specific? Are you using power compacts, T5's some other bulb? whats the watts on them ? How long has your tank been set up? What kind of filtration/skimmer do you run?

Skeet is right.
If the purple algae is slimy comes off easily then it’s probably cyano bacteria. Decrease total light to < 8 hours and increase or adjust circulation. (Add a power head or move an existing one.)

If it seems pretty well stuck on there and it’s harder it’s probably coralline algae and that’s good. You can (carefully) scrape it off your glass with a razor if it bothers you but it is beneficial to your tank.

P.S. This is only my opinion based on my experience, so get your aggression out on something else instead of flaming. Try some rigorous exercise.

hey sorry for the late reply...

yeh im running a 4f size marine glo 40w and an 4ft size power glow 40w for my lighting.
The 'purple' algae is smooth and comes off easily.
I am running the jebo 819 external filter and a orca protien skimmer with an attatched air pump.

As for photos ill try get sum up hopefully tomorrow.

thanx everyone for thier replies.....
