Purple/blue gig updates

Now i know who beat me to that green Gig at aquapros :) Nice score! As soon as i saw it on their facebook page, i called Dave but was too late as he told me it was already sold.

thought it was so acessible with texas too since Minh and other guys from texas are posting pics left and right with latest acquisitions, Every region takes a turn on the nems I think, sure west coast is possibly best place for nems. Thanks Tassod, yeah I texted him monday and he says I have green ones, then if I waited one more minute on tues, you would have had him but just made payment over phone to save it since when I saw the pic, it was quite a nice one on a rock, will keep you guys posted.

That the West Coast is best for nems is a myth. Unless they are more available in NorCal I don't know, but here in SoCal it's all about overpriced corals.

really clorox, so I would say southeast asia then but its another continent ha ha, somebody post pics with shops in hongkong a month ago. I am not sure why there is a shortage on gigs, they use to be readily available.

Thanks Dave, nice to see you again my friend. Here are pics on 4th of July

Actually, not Hong Kong. Singapore. I used to live there until last year, I would see gigs from my apartment window (using binoculars) during low tide. Ironically I wasn't allowed to keep an aquarium as I was renting.

Did you see my philippine trip photos clorox, was in the PI 3 months ago, check it out. Gigs all over with ocellaris.

Yes, I did. Very very cool. I am always amazed at how hardy gigs are in their natural habitat. In Singapore they would be partially exposed to air during low tides for several hours. I even saw birds stepping on them looking for crustaceans. I lived next to a marina, so the water was far from pristine, also the Singapore harbor is one of the largest in the world, and despite the impact on the habitat they still seemed to thrive.
However, around SG you would only see tons of tan and greens, blues are rare, and you'd have to cross the strait and go to Bintan in Indonesia, just a couple hours by boat.

HONG KONG has more gigs and mags than ive ever seen.

Thanks Jared, we had to move purple one into a rock, a bit upset but settled under the green. Taylor t did a great job settling him in, he is a nem whisperer :), he also tuned in the flow with mp40s from my 225 which i am going to close for now for a bit of a vaca. kH is better Dave at 10 via salifert this am if you were wondering.

Great job Taylor! I've noticed that these Gig's seem to do well in tanks with a lot of algae or just very mature and aged in general. Pete, looking back at ur vacation photo's and your tank, it appears that you've almost created the Gig's natural habitat. Did you do that on purpose or it just kinda happened that way. I would assume you planted the different types of algae in there correct?

Anyway, they seem to all be thriving! I'm enjoying the pictures and stories.

Thanks guys. I've learned a lot from Pete too. That big blue's foot is through the gravel to the grate under the substrate. Interesting.

yeah he moved t here after I came back from my trip,he was perched on smallest rocks of tank,as to thealgae in tank,we placed algae as a decorative accent to tank and not knowing that they lived in sandbeds in shallow waters, but I have to trim down periodically. its great that this forum gives a chance to learn from each other and sharing the knowledge is priceless when it comes to gigs

I used algae in my 75 only because I wanted simple for maintenance. I don't have a fuge like the 210, so I thought I'd just use some macro in the tank itself, not knowing it was going to take over like it did. It gets thick fast. Life's too busy, not enough time to wipe, so my filtration on my tanks is super simple, or as simple as can be, no reactors. I had issues for a while, not pruning it back. The rotting stuff under it was causing problems earlier. Pruning is a must.
Simple sump of 75 gig tank: skimmer, return - that's it.

Skims wetter than most I'd imagine. That's 2 days worth. An overstocked gig tank puts out some waste.

Pete's got a simple sump on his gig tank too, basically the same.

Indeed!

Hey Taylor, check out Avast Marine. I absolutely love my skim waste collection resevior. The only thing I regret is not getting the largest one. It takes a lot of work out of skimming wet (my preference). I only clean my cup once a week on average, but sometimes longer. They even have a 5 gallon bucket. Lol

I like the Carbon trap, it keeps the smell from escaping into your house. Mine is also hooked up to my Apex with a pressure sensitive switch that will shut my skimmer off when the resevior gets full. Very nice feature. No overflows. This waste collector has really made my life easier.
