Purple Death palythoa

I have some (about 30) of them and they are not opening up all the way. They are also kind of on the small side. The goods news is that are spreading a lot but I need some suggestions on what I can do to get them to really open up well. I'm not really much of a zoa or paly "expert" so some suggestions would be appreciated. They are on egg crate (about 2" for the waters surface) in a 6' x 30" x 12" deep frag tank under a 6' T5 Aquactinics constellation along with a bunch of other frags. All of the frags look great except for these. It could be something as simple as too much light but I'm not sure.

By the way, I have had these for several months...no pests that I can tell.

Mine started off as specks, literally and have grown and multiplied fairly quickly. However, the polyps themselves continue to stay around dime to nickel size. I have a small colony of nuke greens (similar species) and they range in size from speck to quarter. All of these are in moderate flow and high lighting conditions under 250W MH and they stay pretty much flat open during the day.

You might also want to dust the plug/disc with some sand or crushed coral particles as palys tend to use that in their body structure. That may allow them to grow a bit more.

Scott,

I keep zoos in one of our tanks and with T5s they like it deeper in the tank. Say around 12". 2" from the water surface is too close.

Thanks,

Tom

I started with 2 polyps, started feeding them soft sinking pellets, in 1-2 months now have 7-8 extra polyps... same as nuclear deaths

delsol650,

I'm curious on thes "soft sinking pellets" you are referring to? Does it have a name?
